New walking and cycling plans survey extended
We've extended the consultation on our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan until Sunday, 4 September, so there's still time to share your thoughts on our suggestions to improve the borough's active travel links.
It's been running since 11 July and we've had thousands of responses since then, after publicising it widely across all our platforms. However, we still want to make absolutely sure that everybody's had the chance to have their say before the summer holidays end.
The plan is a "high level" one so these are just ideas for now - we won't go ahead with anything until we've consulted you in more depth. Nonetheless, we need this plan in place to help us get Government funding in years to come and your comments will help us make sure we're on the right track.

Welcoming new citizens to Wokingham Borough
A citizenship ceremony at Wokingham Town Hall has taken place with registrars welcoming twenty-five new citizens to the borough this month (August 2022).
All applicants aged 18 or older who are accepted by the Home Office for citizenship by naturalisation or registration must take an oath of allegiance and pledge of loyalty whilst the national anthem is played, before they can become a British Citizen.
During the ceremony, which took place on Wednesday 17 August, new citizens were presented with certificates from the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire James Puxley and a gift of a passport cover from Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Caroline Smith.
Since being elected as Wokingham Borough Mayor in May, Cllr Caroline Smith has attended three citizenship ceremonies (held in June, July and August) and presented certificates to 73 new citizens.
Cough for more than three weeks? See your GP
GP referrals for lung cancer have been the slowest of all cancer types to recover since the start of the pandemic.
Through the next stage of the ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign, NHS England will focus specifically on lung cancer symptoms and raising awareness of the key symptom, which is a cough that lasts three weeks or more.
Anyone who has this symptom should contact their GP as soon as possible, as the cancer is more likely to be treatable if it is caught early. Don’t wait to see if the cough resolves itself, as a cough on its own can be enough of a warning sign.
Other symptoms of lung cancer include:
- Chest infections that keep coming back
- Coughing up blood
- Aches or pain when breathing or coughing
- Persistent breathlessness, tiredness or lack of energy
- Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
Residents aged 60 and over are particularly vulnerable to lung cancer and should not be reluctant to see their GP. If you know a friend or family member that has a persistent cough, encourage them to get it checked out. It may be nothing serious, but it could help save a life.
What you might have missed
- There’s less than a month left to apply for your council tax energy rebate payment if you live in a band A to D property. If you live in one of these properties and haven’t had a £150 payment from us in recent motnhs, you’ve got until 30 September to apply
- We’ve also launched our discretionary energy rebate scheme, which is for those living in a band E to H property. You can apply for this energy rebate if on 1 April 2022 you were In receipt of Council Tax Support (CTS), or a student or severely mentally impaired household, or annexe occupied by elderly relative, or in receipt of Disabled Persons Relief, or if you or someone you live with is severely mentally impaired, or if you are a registered foster carer
- If your child has an upcoming birthday, you can celebrate it at Cantley Park in Wokingham. It costs £125 for two hours which includes one hour on our state-of-the-art 3G football pitch and one hour in the Ashridge Room (facility hire only). Hiring is available for weekends, for more information email sport@wokingham.gov.uk
- There’s still time to respond to the proposed changes to Rose Street in Wokingham, with changes to make it safer for residents to cross the road near its junction with Broad Street. Consultation closes on 9 September
- The school term starts officially later this week. We've got a guide to term dates in our schools on our website, but actual start dates may differ from school to school due to inset days
