Wokingham Borough Connect
Share your views on walking and cycling plans
There's just one week left to help shape our plans for better walking and cycling facilities across the borough - and we still want to hear how we can improve things.
We're seeking your views until next Friday on our borough-wide Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which suggests improvements in different areas, and a new active travel route between Woodley and Palmer Park in Reading.
You can view and share your thoughts on our ideas for your neighbourhood, or comment on our suggested walking and cycling networks more generally, on our LCWIP consultation page.
The Woodley-Reading proposal, which would be supported by the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund, has been changed to remove a one-way system following a consultation this spring.
We can't consider comments on social media - so if you’ve got a strong opinion on these, please take a moment to reply through our consultation pages.
What's planned for my area?

Bus operator highlights climate crisis
Reading Buses, which operates services across Wokingham borough alongside its sister company Thames Valley Buses, has redecorated one of its fleet to draw attention to the climate emergency.
The single-decker vehicle has been decorated with blue and red "warming stripes" depicting the increase in global temperatures as a result of carbon emissions.
It’s powered by low-carbon bio methane and covers several routes including the Leopard 3, which runs from Reading to Shinfield, Arborfield and Wokingham town.
This serves the University of Reading, which was a partner in this initiative as the stripes were created by its climate science expert Professor Ed Hawkins. He produced the design, printed on recyclable vinyl, to illustrate the problem visually.
We support this gesture as we declared a climate emergency in 2019 and we’ve pledged to play as full a role as we can in reducing Wokingham borough's carbon emissions to net zero by 2030.
Using public transport is one of the easiest ways that residents can help cut emissions, along with walking and cycling more, which is why we're working to save our services as they strive to overcome the impact of the covid-19 pandemic.
Rail strikes - a reminder
Further railway strikes are planned this Saturday (13 August) as well as next Thursday and Saturday. Operators affected include GWR and Avanti West Coast.
Significantly reduced services are expected on strike days and could affect train travel in the days after. For the latest updates, see the National Rail website.
Wheel-y generous response to refugee bike appeal
Last month, our My Journey Wokingham active travel team was seeking bikes to give to Ukrainian refugees in the borough.
At one stage they were running very low, so they sent out a plea for more donations through this newsletter. Since then, the response has been so overwhelming that they no longer have room for any more.
A massive thank you to everyone who responded so kindly - and if more help is needed in future, we'll be sure to announce it.
