Lots of people are struggling with the cost of living crisis and we are doing everything we can to help.
One of the ways we are supporting is by providing vouchers for families on benefits-related free school meals, to help with food over the summer holidays.
We don’t know if the government will be providing this support during future breaks. That’s why we have committed to supporting families with children on free school meals during school holidays from the end of the summer, right through to May 2023.
We’ll be working with local schools to get messages out to families. In the meantime, we encourage anyone who is struggling to pay for essentials like food and bills to come forward for help through the Household Support Fund.

Let’s set a new record for Cycle September
We’re urging residents and workplaces across Wokingham borough to help us make this year’s Love to Ride Cycle September challenge the most successful yet.
Our My Journey Wokingham active travel team is calling on at least 1,000 businesses, charities or community groups to saddle up and jointly rack up at least 150,000 miles throughout the month.
Anyone can sign up their company and start encouraging colleagues to take part, and the scheme is open to everybody over the age of 13 who lives, works or studies in the borough.
A new bike of the winner’s choice, worth up to £1,000, is up for grabs in a prize draw for anyone who registers before 1 September – and other prizes include £4,000 towards a dream holiday.
The challenge is fun, friendly and welcoming to all riders, regardless of experience or ability, and offers a little gentle rivalry as people compete to top the local leaderboard. We’re proud to back it as part of our commitment to promoting active and sustainable alternatives to driving.
Campaign to speed up trains gathering steam
We’re campaigning to improve train journey times between stations in Wokingham borough and London Waterloo in a bid to encourage more people to use the service.
The 36-mile journey takes an hour and 17 minutes but we believe South Western Railway, the operator, could reduce this to just 59 minutes by introducing “fast” trains that don’t stop at stations between Twickenham and the capital.
With passenger numbers either stagnating or falling at Earley, Winnersh Triangle, Winnersh and Wokingham stations during at least the four years prior to the coronavirus pandemic, we say the time is right to pursue this idea and make train travel a more attractive option again.
This will reduce car usage, a key priority as we strive to meet our pledge to address the climate emergency by doing everything we can to reduce the borough’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2030.
The proposal to improve train journey times has the support of all parties after a motion at a full council meeting last month.
Give back to the local community
Ever considered volunteering in your spare time? Lots of local charities need volunteers to help right now.
We recently met with volunteers from Citizens Advice Wokingham to find out what they enjoy most about it, the type of work they do, why they chose to do it and why they would recommend it to others.
For more information on volunteering in the local area, visit the Wokingham Volunteer Centre website.
