Wokingham Borough Connect
New road serving North Wokingham now fully open
A major road built to serve new housing and relieve congestion in and around Wokingham town, which has new footpaths and cycle paths along its length, is now open in full.
On Wednesday (29 June) we opened the final section of the North Wokingham Distributor Road at Ashridge Farm, between Bell Foundry Lane and Dalley Road, to create a continuous route from Reading Road near the M4 overbridge to London Road near Coppid Beech roundabout.
The 3.5-mile road is the main access through the borough’s major new community at North Wokingham and offers an alternative route for through traffic avoiding the town centre. It has an off-road cycle path to encourage active travel and reduce vehicle journeys, plus new nature parks where more than 2,000 trees have been planted and wildlife habitats created.
Some sections were built by developers in line with their planning permission for new housing, while others were built by the authority’s contractor Balfour Beatty with funding which developers were required to contribute.
These include a new carriageway to the west of Old Forest Road, which has a 45m bridge crossing the railway line, as well as upgraded sections of Old Forest Road and Toutley Road and the new Queens Road, Bell Foundry Lane, Diamond Jubilee Way and Oak Avenue.
New traffic-free route to help active travel
Work is now under way on the latest phase of our greenways project – a network of mostly traffic-free routes to make active travel to key destinations in the borough much easier.
The latest section of this project, which is being carried out in phases, will cross Woosehill Meadows in Wokingham town between Reading Road and Heron Road, as part of a wider route linking Cantley Park to the north with Arborfield Cross to the west.
Contractors have started creating a new path from the north of Woosehill Meadows, near to the Reading Road underpass, heading south through Woosehill Meadows to the Kingfisher Bridge. Work has also started on a link from Smiths Walk to Heron Road.
Most of the work should finish by early August, with further works including the installation of a new bridge over the Emm Brook at the northern end of Woosehill Meadows expected in the autumn.
Bike Month Challenge smashes records
Well done to all participants in Love to Ride's Bike Month Challenge – we’re celebrating our best results yet! You rode a staggering 8,500 more miles than during last year’s Cycle September, bringing home a whopping 50,635 miles in total.
Three of our Wokingham borough riders were in the top 20 nationally and we had several riders completing over 100 miles in a day!
If anyone wants to book in for adult cycle lessons for beginners or improvers in preparation for Cycle September please visit our website to book.
Longer travel times expected in Henley this weekend
People travelling to and around Henley this weekend should factor in more time, as the regatta is once more taking place in the area.
Established in 1839, the six day event regularly sees more than 300,000 people attend.
The event started on Tuesday (28 June), and traffic and public transport is likely to be busier than usual. For those attending the event, Henley Royal Regatta have put together a guide to public transport and how to get there and park if travelling by car.
