£32,500+ raised to help child refugees
Our community coordinated crowdfunding for child refugees from Ukraine raised £32,562. We’d like to say a huge thank you to more than 500 people who kindly donated to Chance to Thrive.
The money will help to make sure all children and young people arriving here from Ukraine can fit in and live as full a life as possible with us. It will help pay for:
- Equipment for education (including digital technology)
- Membership of sports clubs (such as football, basketball, netball etc)
- Membership of social organisations (such as Scouts or Guides)
- Membership of cultural groups (such as drama groups, theatre schools or dance classes)
- Equipment or kit necessary to participate in sporting, social or cultural activities
In the months ahead we’ll show and tell you how the money is being used to make a difference.
If you're community minded and like the idea of helping on the frontline of our Ukraine response, we're still recruiting case support workers to join our Ukraine response team. Go to our jobs pages to find out more.
Country park paddling pool opens for summer
The paddling pool at California Country Park in Finchampstead is now open, welcoming everyone back to beat the summer heat on the water.
The pool opens at 10am and closes at 5.45pm every day. Each pool session lasts for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Visitors are welcome to stay as long as they like on weekdays from now until 16 July, when the pool is expected to be less busy than on weekends.
Booking for entry can now be made online. Tickets cost £2.60 for all ages entering the water, and £1 for adults who need to enter the pool area to supervise children but not the pool itself.
Vote to keep current election cycle
Voters will continue to go to the polls three years out of every four after councillors voted not to move to all out elections every four years on Wednesday night.
A change to the election cycle would have required a two-thirds majority in favour at the meeting but a majority of councillors voted against the change.
The council will have all-out elections in May 2024 as a result of the Boundary Commission for England electoral review and then will revert to the current cycle of elections three out of every four years.
Protect yourself and others from Covid-19
Covid-19 infection rates are rising across the UK. Experts are putting this partly down to the increase in mixing over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, as well as new variants that are emerging which can cause infection even in those that have recently had Covid.
The best protection against Covid-19 is the vaccine. We are encouraging everyone who is eligible to come forward for their first, second, booster, or second booster dose. You can get vaccinated at the Wokingham Library vaccine centre over the weekend, or find an alternative location through the NHS website.
If you aren’t feeling well then stay at home and avoid close contact with others. When meeting others, it’s best to make the most of the weather and do this outside, or let fresh air in if meetings indoors. Finally, continue to wash your hands regularly and wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed places.
