Wokingham Borough Connect
Wheely great day as pupils catch up on cycle training
Pupils from Year 7 at the Piggott secondary school in Wargrave took part in a bike skills training workshop to make up for an opportunity they missed during coronavirus restrictions.
Funded by the council and taught by Avanti Cycling, 52 boys and girls enjoyed a Level 2 Bikeability course, where they learned to safely navigate quiet roads with only light traffic flows in the Twyford area, having already completed their Level 1 courses in off-road locations like car parks or playgrounds.
The council’s My Journey Wokingham active travel team and Avanti worked closely with the school to work out how to fit the session around its regular timetable.
Now the pupils are eligible to complete the final stage, Bikeability Level 3, in which they can learn to tackle more challenging situations like complex junctions and roundabouts.
A similar initiative was held by the council at The Forest School in Winnersh last September, when 23 pupils who missed out on Bikeability training at primary school enjoyed a catch-up.
Barkham Ride drainage works
Works will be starting on Barkham Ride later this month to fix ongoing issues with drains that have caused intermittent flooding in the area.
The works will run from 27 June to 12 August, with most of the work happening on the footpath between Gorse Ride North and Caroline Place.
Traffic management will be in place for lane closures, using a three way signal. If the road needs to be closed for any period of time, we will let residents know.
DriveStart booking open
Booking is open for the next DriveStart experience on 28 July at Madejski Stadium in Reading.
The course costs £20 per person and is available for those aged between 15 and 19 to prepare them for becoming a driver.
The course lasts from 10am to 3pm and includes a number of skills based workshops to help develop and guide the students into becoming better drivers.
As part of this they will receive two sessions behind the wheel, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, approximately 15 minutes each.
The workshops will include:
- Applying for a license, the highway code and the tests you need to pass
- Hazard Perception
- How to operate a vehicle, and what manoeuvres make up part of the test
- The costs of owning a car
- Vehicle Maintenance
- First Aid
Courses fill up fast - book soon so you don't miss out!
Why Walk?
Nine per cent of borough households don't have a car, compared to 19 per cent in the South East and 26 per cent in England*
Around a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transport, and in 2017 over 90% of total domestic transport greenhouse gas emissions were from road transport. (Latest figures available)
Road transport is the single biggest contributor to poor air quality. The Committee on Climate Change has identified getting people to switch from cars to walking and cycling as one of the things that individuals and households can do to reduce their carbon footprint to help meet UK and global climate goals.
Road congestion is a challenge for towns and cities across the country. While congestion is annoying and frustrating it also has an economic cost associated with delays in moving goods and people around the country.
Pedestrians and cyclists take up far less space than cars, meaning it is possible to move a much greater number of people through a space if they choose to travel on foot or by bicycle, as you can see in the image below which shows the same number of people in each image and how much road space they take up.
The next edition of the Climate Emergency newsletter will focus on the benefits of walking for the environment as well as health and wellbeing and will include tips and advice:
- Walking to school
- Walking to work
- Walking for health, leisure and wellbeing
- Finding a walk
