Help make Summer Reading Challenge a success
Ahead of our annual Summer Reading Challenge, we are looking for young people to act as volunteers.
If you are aged 16 to 24 and enjoy reading and working with children, this opportunity may be for you.
Volunteers will encourage children to take part in and complete this year’s Summer Reading Challenge and help out with library duties and activities.
This is a fun opportunity and a great addition to your CV, with volunteers needed at our libraries in Woodley and Lower Earley from Wednesday 27 July to Thursday 25 August.

Singing, rhyming and stories for children and parents
Rhymetime involves fun songs and rhymes for babies aged 0 to 18 months. Sessions are free, but places must be booked in advance.
The next one is at Lower Earley Library on Tuesday 21 June from 10am and will last 30 minutes.
Storytime is for children under five and parents and features fun stories and rhymes.

Two centuries of jubilation for kings and queens
Join us for an illustrated talk by Peter Must from the Wokingham Society about the various ways that jubilees have been celebrated over the last 200 years.
This will feature examples from across the country and internationally, with a focus on Wokingham, from King George III to Queen Elizabeth II.
The talk will be held at Wokingham Library on Thursday 14 July from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Sharing top tips on nutrition and diet
Registered nutritionist Joanne Hart will be providing advice on nutrition and diet for new arrivals to the UK during a free workshop on Wednesday 6 July.
She is based in Wokingham and will be sharing some of her top tips and encouraging people to share stories about food from their own countries.
During the workshop, which will run from 1pm to 2.30pm at Wokingham Library, she will discuss:
- What vegetables and fruits are in season across the year
- Eating to prevent common diseases, such as diabetes type 2 and heart issues
- Guidance on where to get personalised nutrition advice and options to organise private tests
- Looking through recipes and restaurant menus and learning how to read nutrition labels
Guests are encouraged to bring a food item from their country, or a photo, to allow for a group discussion.

Learn about history of Wokingham and your family
Join us on a guided heritage walk around Wokingham town centre with Peter Must from the Wokingham Society on Thursday 21 July and learn some fascinating facts.
This is a free event and if you are interested in taking part you should meet in the café area of Wokingham Library at 10.30am. The walk is due to finish at 12 noon.

A Family History Drop-In session is running at Wokingham Library on Tuesday 28 June from 2pm to 4.30pm.
Get free expert advice in tracing your family tree with volunteers from the Berkshire Family History Society. The drop-in sessions take place on the last Tuesday of each month, apart from December.
Online resources available at your library
There are lots of online resources available that you may find interesting.
From a library computer, you can use Ancestry.com and research your family history; the British Newspaper Archive, a collection of historic local and national newspapers; and Access to Research, which gives access to publicly-funded academic research.
From the library, or from your home, you can access 'Who Else Writes Like…?' and 'Who Next?'. These databases give you suggestions of authors to try based on your current likes and favourite authors.
Get support while making your next career move
An adviser from the National Careers Service will be at Wokingham Library every Tuesday from 10am to 1pm to give career and CV advice.
This could help if you are looking for a new job, thinking of a career change or want to build your confidence when it comes to employment.
