Wokingham Borough Observatory launched
We’ve recently launched the Wokingham Borough Observatory, an online platform hosting a wealth of data and information related to health and wellbeing in the Borough. This ranges from economic and employment data, through to environmental data, and information directly related to health outcomes.
The Wokingham Borough Observatory is the new home for the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA). This is a statutory document which local authorities and clinical commissioning groups use to assess current and future health, care and wellbeing needs of the local community, and to inform local decision-making. It provides easy access to a wide range of local health and wellbeing information and data about the borough and its residents.
The site obtains its data automatically from a range of sources, and provides users with up-to-date and reliable data. It has been designed so users can easily download reports, graphics, data and other statistics in their preferred format. The information is presented under thematic chapters on:
- Population and demographics
- Children and young people’s health and wellbeing
- Adult health and social care
- Housing
- Crime and community safety
- Deprivation
- Economy and employment
- Environment

Beat the heat with these top tips
Although warm weather is something many people look forward to, it is worth remembering that sunny spells can pose health risks. Protect yourself and think of others, such as children and older people, who may be affected more.
The UK Health Security Agency issues public health alerts for heat and we will share these when they are issued, but you can also listen to weather forecasts and plan ahead to avoid the heat if possible.
As well as keeping hydrated and staying out of the sun, it is a good idea to know how to deal with heat exhaustion if someone you know is affected.
When the weather turns warmer, it can be tempting to cool off in lakes and rivers. More than 400 people accidentally drown in the UK and Ireland every year and many more have non-fatal incidents, sometimes suffering life-changing injuries.
More information on how to stay safe during the summer is available on our news website.
Healthy Eating Week
Today is the start of Healthy Eating Week and a great opportunity for people of all ages to think about their eating habits.
The 10th year of the event, which is run by the British Nutrition Foundation, has a theme of ‘Eat well for you and the planet’ to reflect the need for a healthy and sustainable diet.
There is also a different theme for each day:
- Monday: Focus on fibre - for meals and snacks
- Tuesday: Get at least 5 a day - put plenty on your plate
- Wednesday: Vary your protein - be more creative
- Thursday: Stay hydrated - fill up from the tap
- Friday: Reduce food waste - know your portions
Everyone can get involved and there are lots of resources available online to help schools, workplaces and community groups get involved. There are also recipes to help get you started.
