Bank holiday waste and recycling collections
There are no changes to your waste collections this long bank holiday weekend, with collections taking place as normal on Thursday and Friday this week (2 and 3 June).
Collections may take place earlier than usual so please put your blue bags, recycling bags, food waste caddies and garden waste out the night before. If you need to check your waste collection day, use the tool on our website.
The re3 recycling centres are open as normal, if you’re planning a visit make sure you book via the Click & Tip service.
Almost 400 donate to help child refugees
- More than 350 refugees due to arrive, including almost 150 children
- Almost 150 host families opening their homes in the borough
-
Case worker team, like Lisa and Chris above, set up to provide ongoing support to hosts and guests
- Free SIM cards, bicycles and helmets, gym memberships, bus passes, welcome events and welcome packs via our partners
The borough’s response to help Ukrainian refugees has been incredible, shown in the information above.
Almost 400 people have donated to our Chance to Thrive fund, coordinated community fundraising to help child refugees coming to the area. We’re just short of our initial £25,000 pledged target. There’s less than £1,000 left to reach it.
Anything we raise on top of this will also go towards the fund, which pays for equipment for education (digital technology), sports clubs, social organisations, such as scouts and guides, and cultural groups like music or drama groups. As well as the equipment to take part in these.
Can you help us reach the target today? Donate using the button below.
Final stretch before Carnival Hub opening
The multi-million pound Carnival Hub, our flagship new community building in Wokingham town centre, is almost finished.
The hub brings together a large leisure centre and a new home for Wokingham library, along with flexible cultural use of the space.
There has been a lot of activity on site during the last few weeks as it enters the final phase of construction. The main pool has been filled, while the studios on the first floor are now complete and ready for the fitness equipment to arrive in early June. The main gym area is also nearing completion.
Due to national issues with labour and materials, the leisure centre is now expected to open in mid-July – the date to be confirmed as soon as possible. There was also a delay in connecting the electricity supply which was only connected in mid-May so more time is needed to test equipment.
You can see more pictures of the facility on Facebook and Instagram.

Reminders ahead of the jubilee weekend
We’ll have a special Residents’ Round-up for you on Friday covering all you need to know for how the jubilee weekend is being marked in the borough.
But if you need to know now, our Platinum Jubilee hub has some key details:
What you might have missed
- More than 700 children attended our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme during the last school holidays. The programme is funded by the Department for Education and offers free activities and healthy meals in longer school holidays to children and young people across the borough who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals
- Low intensity, strengthening exercises have helped almost 90 older people in the borough to become more mobile and reduce social isolation through our Moving With Confidence scheme
- We are looking for self-employed fitness instructors to deliver a series of fitness programmes to our residents during early mornings, evenings and weekends. If you can help or to find out more email sport@wokingham.gov.uk
