Donate to help Ukrainian child refugees
The Covid-19 pandemic was a fine example of the borough coming together to support those who needed help. Now we’ve got a chance to do the same to help children fleeing war-torn Ukraine.
We’re nearing 150 child refugees due to arrive into the borough from Ukraine. We’ve set up the Chance to Thrive fund to co-ordinate help for them, funding:
- Equipment for education (including digital technology)
- Membership of sports clubs (such as football, basketball, netball etc)
- Membership of social organisations (such as Scouts or Guides)
- Membership of cultural groups (such as drama groups, theatre schools or dance classes)
- Equipment or kit necessary to participate in sporting, social or cultural activities
Over 300 people have contributed more than £20,000 so far, but we need to reach out £25,000 target so funding can be released. Donate using the button below.
Covid-19 vaccines still available in the borough
Thank you to everyone who has visited our vaccine centre at the Wokingham Library. If you or someone in your family needs a first, second, booster, or second booster dose, you can book an appointment online through the NHS website.
The site is also accepting walk-ins. Vaccine availability varies by day. This weekend it’s open:
- Friday 27 May (9.30am-4.30pm) - Spring boosters for over 75s and immunosuppressed people, and first, second and booster doses for over 18s (Moderna)
- Saturday 28 May (9.30am-4.30pm) - First and second doses for 12-17 year olds, second doses for 18-74 year olds and booster doses for 16-17 year olds (Pfizer)
- Sunday 29 May (10.30am-4.30pm) - First doses for 5-11 year olds (Pfizer)
It won’t be open next weekend (3, 4 and 5 June). Keep an eye on our Covid-19 vaccine webpage for future opening times, as well as our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
Coming soon: Household Support Fund
We have been awarded a sum of money from Central Government to help residents who are struggling with rising living costs. This is called the Household Support Fund and it is the second phase of the funding.
We will be working closely with the local voluntary sector to distribute the money. Please keep an eye on our Local Support Hub page and social media feeds in the next couple of weeks for more information on how to access it.
Support for families
Are you and your family getting all the support you’re entitled to? If you receive certain benefits, you can apply for free school meals for your child. Support is also available during school holidays, with all eligible families on free school meals receiving food vouchers this week for half term.
During the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays we also run the Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF). This is funded by the Department for Education and supported by us.
More than 700 children and young people who are eligible for benefits-related school meals enjoyed free activities and healthy meals over Easter. Find out more about the HAF programme on our website.
