Award-winning scheme extended for another year
It's one year since we identified a health and wellbeing need and launched our Moving with Confidence scheme to help residents recondition through low-intensity, strengthening exercises, helping them to build their confidence and become more mobile following the social isolation created through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Initially launched as a pilot, the scheme helped eighty-seven Wokingham Borough residents. Following the success of the pilot and to provide post-Covid support, the Moving with Confidence programme commenced and was jointly funded by us and the NHS.
The scheme not only improved the physical health of borough residents but also helped them with their wellbeing, building confidence and improving their independence with daily tasks such as going outside of their home, attending social events and visiting the shops. It led to improvements in residents’ physical mobility and a positive boost towards their mental health and wellbeing.
To date, the programme has made 621 individual visits and helped 157 residents living in the borough.
Earlier this year, the scheme received the Physical Activity Hero Award, awarded to those who have positively impacted others through physical activity and sport in the county during 2021 by the Get Berkshire Active Awards.

Free domestic abuse training for beauty and hair professionals
Did you know that one in four women and one in six men experience domestic abuse at some point in their life?
We are working with local councils to deliver the Cut It Out campaign, a series of free online training for professionals working in the hair and beauty industry across Wokingham Borough. The campaign was initially launched in Norfolk following the death of Kerri McAuley, who was killed in 2017 by her abusive partner. Before her death, Kerri had disclosed to her hairdresser that she was the victim of domestic abuse and reached out for support.
The Cut It Out campaign recognises that a hairdresser, barber or beauty therapist is in a position of privilege with their client, not only working physically close to them but also very often, they are someone trusted to talk to or confide in.
The one hour event takes place on Tuesday 14 June at 6pm and provides training on:
- What domestic abuse is
- How you can recognise the signs of domestic abuse in your clients
- What to do if a client says they are being abused
- The services you can signpost your clients to if they are experiencing domestic abuse
After the training you will receive:
- Resources for you to use
- A certificate of participation
To book your free place, visit the Eventbrite booking website.
If you are unable to attend June's session, there are upcoming events on Monday 19 September and Thursday 24 November at 6pm. To book your free place, visit the Eventbrite booking website.

Volunteer to help people struggling with loneliness
The Link Visiting Scheme in Wokingham is actively recruiting volunteers to help people struggling with loneliness.
The charity runs a befriending service with the aim of improving wellbeing and transforming lives.
If you can spare an hour or two each week, you could help people in the community who have become isolated.
Volunteers are matched to residents based on availability, location and interests and you would be provided with training and support.
Visit The Link Visiting Scheme website if you can help and request a volunteer pack. Once you return your application form, you will be contacted to arrange a date and time to talk through your role in more detail.
