Drivers warned to leave safe gap for cyclists in road safety operation
Motorists on a busy road in Wokingham town were taught a surprise lesson in overtaking cyclists safely thanks to a joint initiative between us and Thames Valley Police.
Those spotted passing too closely, which can put riders’ lives in danger, were pulled over and advised to leave more room in future or risk being fined and getting penalty points on their licence. Our My Journey Wokingham active travel team also offered some education while giving away free cycling-related goodies.
Six motorists were stopped on the morning and the police also checked that their driving licences and motor insurance were valid. Three more were stopped for mobile phone offences while driving and one cyclist was stopped for going through a red light.
Under new rules in the Highway Code, drivers should leave at least 1.5m when passing cyclists - or 2m if either passing above 30mph or at any speed in a long vehicle. Cyclists should also ride at least 0.75m from the nearside kerb where they can.

Saddle up in the sunshine for the chance to win prizes
May is the Love to Ride campaign’s national Bike Month - and we’re urging everyone who lives or works in Wokingham borough to saddle up for the chance to win prizes.
Cyclists of all ages and levels of experience can form teams of up to 10 people and log every journey they take by registering with the Love to Ride Wokingham website.
They’ll be ranked on a leaderboard for both the highest number of active days and the most overall mileage. Newcomers could find themselves storming their way to the top while earning virtual “badges” for achievements like their first ride – or their 100th!
Riders earn points based on the days they ride, total distance and how many others they encourage to sign up – and the more points they win, the more entries they will have into a prize draw with new members’ points being doubled.
Prizes include a bike of the winner’s choice, worth up to £1,500, as well as waterproof bags, high-viz jackets and more.
Elizabeth Line gets opening date
Transport for London have announced 24 May as the opening date for the new Elizabeth Line, just ahead of Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II platinum jubilee, who the line was named in honour of.
A series of construction issues have caused delays on the opening of the new line, originally due to open in 2018, but will now offer a more connected South East, with trains running between Reading, Heathrow and Essex and through central London, including Twyford Station in our borough.
The Elizabeth Line has a total of 41 stations, which have all been designed or upgraded with accessibility in mind. These include:
- Platform edge screens - a safety barrier that helps to keep the platform cool and provides lighting, signs, speakers and CCTV
- Passenger information above each door - showing departing services
- Signs designed to be easily legible, with clear, accessible language helped by symbols
- Newly-designed seating
- Step free from street to platform
In the areas outside stations, features such as forecourts, plazas and wider pavements create pedestrian friendly, accessible spaces.
Although the service starts on 24 May, further changes will happen over the next 12 months and by May 2023 will be fully operational.
