Wokingham Borough Connect
Your views on electronic traffic signs
We want to hear your thoughts on the new electronic message signs which we’ve installed to tackle congestion in eight hotspots around Wokingham borough.
There are two of these in Wokingham town, two in and around Earley, two in the north of the borough and two in the south, all in places where queues tend to build at peak times.
They can be programmed to show a variety of messages to help you make better decisions about how, when and where to travel, including the cause of any delays and alternative routes or travel options.
We want to know whether these are clear and easy to understand – and whether they’ve helped you with any of your recent journeys.
By sharing your views, you'll be helping us ensure they're working as effectively as possible. It's only a short survey and we'd be thankful for a few minutes of your time. Respond using the button below.
Park Lane to open next week
We're pleased to announce that a newly redirected section of Park Lane near Arborfield and Finchampstead, between the junctions of Hogwood Lane and Nine Mile Ride, will open to traffic at about midday next Wednesday (27 April).
Our contractor Balfour Beatty is about to finish joining it to the existing road network as part of our Nine Mile Ride Extension project, which we're hoping to complete in the next few weeks.
This marks the end of a period of closures on Park Lane and we thank you for your patience while during these essential works. We know they've been frustrating at times but they'll improve journey times in the long run.
The new section includes a roundabout which, in time, will link to the extended Nine Mile Ride and form a new access road through our major new community at the former Arborfield Garrison.
The northern half of the extension, which runs from the A327 to the Bohunt School and Arborfield Green Leisure Centre, opened some time ago and the final section will follow soon, once it's been fully surfaced.
This will also serve proposed new homes in the southern half of our Arborfield major development.
Opening planned for North Wokingham Distributor Road
Balfour Beatty is also gearing up to open the penultimate stages of our North Wokingham Distributor Road, which will serve new homes on the major development in that part of Wokingham town.
A new section to the west of Old Forest Road and an improved stretch of Toutley Road, which will link to Queen's Road to the east, are both set to open in the week commencing Monday, 9 May.
The final section at Ashridge Farm, between Bell Foundry Lane and Dalley Road, can't safely be opened yet because developers building new homes in the area still need access for construction works.
We're in discussions with Barratt Homes and Crest Nicholson to agree an opening date and will keep you informed.
Pedalling to success
Children across the borough have been taking part in Bikeability training, giving them the skills and confidence to cycle on local roads.
In 2021/22, 1,501 children have taken part in a Bikeability course - around two-thirds of year six pupils. Younger children have also been getting on their bikes, with 273 taking part in Learn to Ride courses.
This is a big jump from 2020/21, during which 872 children took part in Bikeability courses and 99 attended Learn to Ride.
Bikeability courses are undertaken by trained instructors and start at level one, with pupils practicing off road - usually on a school playground.
[Level two sees them moving to quieter roads to experience 'real' cycling, with level three offering more advanced skills, such as negotiating more complex roads and riding alongside other cyclists.
Bikeability is offered free at all primary and junior schools across the borough, funded by a grant from the Department for Transport.
Learn to Ride offers younger children the chance to ditch the stabilisers and become confident on two wheels, with courses in Finchampstead and Woodley available for £6 a session.
