Get involved with our fun Easter activities
Why not drop into the library and create a unique sand art picture to take home?
Sand art is a hands on, bright and colourful crafts activity loved by children and adults. It costs £4 per picture and this must be paid on the day to Kids Bee Happy with Maddi. Sessions are suitable for children aged three to ten.
These are being held Woodley Library on Tuesday 19 April from 10am to 12noon, at Wokingham Library on Wednesday 20 April from 2pm to 4pm and at Lower Earley Library on Thursday 21 April from 10am to 12 noon.
The team at Explore Learning is organising a handwriting workshop at Wokingham Library on Friday 22 April from 12noon to 12.45pm. They use zoo animals to guide children through perfect letter formation.
The session is suitable for children aged four to six and places must be booked.
To register, email libraries@wokingham.gov.uk or you can find out more here.
Art focus: Meet the daring Miss La La
Children are being invited to join artist Chris Holley for a virtual talk that explores the work of French artist Edgar Degas.
You will learn more about Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando and then have a go at creating something inspired by the painting.
The session is for families with children aged seven to ten and runs from 3.15pm to 4pm on Thursday 21 April.
This will be hosted through Microsoft Teams and the link sent out the day before the session, but booking is essential. Visit our library webpages to find out more and to register your interest.
Book your place for Storytime and Rhymetime
We are gradually restoring our popular and free Rhymetime and Storytime sessions – numbers are limited, so booking is essential. Bookings open one week before the event date.
Storytime sessions, which are suitable for adults with children aged 0 to 4, are being held at Woodley Library on Wednesday 27 April at 10am and at Finchampstead Library on Friday 29 April at 10.30am.
Rhymetime sessions, which are for adults with babies aged 0 to 18 months, are at Lower Earley Library on Tuesday 26 April at 10.30am and Wokingham Library on Wednesday 27 April at 10.30am.
Visit the library webpages to see what is available at each library.
Temporary health kiosks fitted in libraries
Residents are being encouraged to make use of new health checkers, which have been installed for a limited time. The Wellpoint kiosks are located at our libraries in Wokingham, Woodley and Lower Earley and available for the next few months only.
The kiosks allow you to measure your weight, body mass index, body fat content, blood pressure and heart rate. You can also receive information about your cardiovascular risk and a heart score.
No booking is required to use the machines and the tests take around five minutes to complete. They are available to everyone, regardless of age, including those who live outside of the borough.
Test results can be printed and sent to your email address and there is also an app available to download to keep track. Once a test has been completed, information is provided to signpost you to local services that might help.
Making our libraries shine for jubilee celebrations
To help celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we would love you to drop into any of our libraries and pick up a bunting template.
Take it home, decorate it, cut it out and return it to us and we will then put all the decorated bunting on display in the library.
Woodley Library will be having a 'write a letter to the Queen' activity, where you will be able to write something, or colour in a picture. All contributions will then go up to create a wall display. If you are interested, ask staff at the library for more details.
Eat cake and help raise funds for a good cause
A charity coffee morning is being held at Lower Earley Library on Friday 29 April from 9.30am until 12noon.
Our team will be supporting a resident's fundraising efforts ahead of her taking on the London Marathon in October. She is raising money for Muscular Dystrophy UK, the UK's leading charity for people affected by muscle-wasting conditions.
Walk and talk about your favourite reads
Join our Walking Book Group on Wednesday 27 April as we walk around the lake at Dinton Pastures Country Park to chat about our favourite books and new releases.
Guests should meet at the Dragonfly Café, now called The Coffee House, at 10.30am and they can then enjoy a tea or coffee at the end of the walk.
Go to our library webpages to find out more and to register your interest or you can email us.
Join in global celebration of reading and books
World Book Night takes place on 23 April every year. This year a new selection of the popular Quick Reads series is being published in time for the occasion.
Whether you are new to reading, short on time, or want to explore new authors and genres, Quick Reads are for you. They are also perfect for less confident readers, edited by a literacy expert to ensure the books are accessible and engaging.
There are eight new titles written by popular authors and these are now available to borrow or reserve from our libraries. You can read more about the titles here.
Tech support and stitching demonstrations
If you are having problems with your laptop, tablet or smartphone, you can get free help from tech experts from Pratts Pods. Visit Wokingham Library on Tuesdays from 2pm and they will be happy to help.
Come and see the art of stitching at a demonstration in the Wokingham Library café. Embroiderers Guild sessions are on the first Wednesday of the month, from 10am to 12noon, and there is no need to book in advance.
