Wokingham Borough Connect
Keeping traffic moving across the borough
As more housing is built in the borough to meet local needs and Government targets, we’re using the latest technology to fight congestion and keep traffic moving on your roads.
By reducing the amount of time vehicles spend idling or circling for a parking place, we’re also improving air quality and playing our part in tackling the climate emergency by cutting emissions.
Our new intelligent transport systems include smart traffic lights which allow us to change signal timings based on how busy it gets at different times of day.
We’re rolling them out at almost every junction in the borough, starting with the busiest, and within the next few months you should notice fewer delays in more locations.
Visit building communities the Wokingham borough way for more information on this project.
Operation Holly
Thames Valley Police has launched its’ annual drink and drug driving campaign, Operation Holly.
Running from 1 December until 1 January 2022, the campaign combines educational and enforcement activity in the run up to Christmas and New Year to tackle drink and drug driving.
Driving whilst impaired through drink or drugs can be a major contributory factor in increasing the chances of road users being killed or seriously injured in a road traffic collision.
As a result of Op Holly last year, 527 breath tests and 105 drug wipes were carried out in the Thames Valley. Of those breath tests, 27 were positive and of the drug wipes, 68 were positive.
If you know of anyone who is drink or drug driving call 999 in an emergency, 101 with information or report via Crimestoppers.
Austin's artwork
Austin from Evendons Primary School has done a great poster about the problems of air pollution from transport.
Air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to health in the UK, with between 28,000 and 36,000 deaths a year attributed to long-term exposure. There is strong evidence that air pollution causes the development of coronary heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and lung cancer, and exacerbates asthma. Children are especially vulnerable to air pollution as their lungs are still growing and developing
Always switch off your engine when you are stationary, especially at school drop of and pick up times. This will help reduce air pollution around the borough and when parked near a school.
