Waste free Christmas gifting
Over £42 million worth of unwanted Christmas gifts are thrown into landfill each year! Get creative with your gifts this year and consider these tips:
- Visit second-hand shops to find unique gifts that are built to last.
- Book a special experience like concert tickets, a fancy meal out or a spa day, rather than material things. These make for unforgettable gifts.
- Tailor your wrapping paper by personality and give your gifts some flair. Wrap your fashionable friend’s gift using an old copy of Vogue, for example, or re-use old comics to wrap kids’ Christmas presents.
- Make a one of a kind gift. Are you a keen cook? Cakes, jams and chutneys can make useful and thoughtful presents, and cut down on food waste.
The Ethical Consumer has great guides for what to buy and what to avoid, as well as rating popular brands by how environmentally friendly they are.
Recycle your Christmas crackers
It is estimated that over 40 million Christmas crackers end up in the bin on Christmas day
So why not opt for crackers that you can recycle and contain gifts that are usable by the recipient.
Alternatively, you could make your own, personalised crackers and hats, cutting down on the waste and making sure you are using recyclable or reusable materials.
E-cards
How about re-thinking your cards this year and send an e-card instead?
If you still want to send a physical card, make sure they have the Forest Stewardship Council logo, meaning the paper was sustainably produced, and avoid ones covered in glitter as these can't be recycled.
