More ideas for your black boxes
We continue to have fantastic ideas for repurposing your old black recycling boxes sent in to us by you.
You’ll see in the picture above is another fantastic option for what to do with your black boxes. These micro wildlife ponds require a bit of pond liner and you’re good to go.
Vegetable planters, storage, donate to a neighbour, hedgehog home and much more are just some of the options. You can read more on our news site.
If you need to collect some extra waterproof bags before you can reuse your boxes, you can pick them up from a community hub near you.
Making the most of your food waste caddy
We’ve seen some residents saying foxes are a problem with them ripping open blue bags looking for food.
Food waste recycling can help stop this. It should keep the foxes out of your blue bags as well as helping the environment and boosting recycling rates. Here’s what can go in the food waste caddies:
- Peelings – anything left over from your fruit or veg should go in the caddy
- Plate scrapings – any food not being kept as leftovers should go in the caddy
- Teabags and coffee grounds – who doesn’t love a cuppa! These can go straight into the caddy
- Meat and bones – any bones can go into your caddy
- Out of date food – should not go into the bin, remove from packaging and pop into the caddy
If you’ve not got a caddy, you can collect from one from a community hub near you. You’ll get both caddies that you need to get started and should have food waste bags from our delivery earlier this year.

- Plastic lids of plastic bottles – leave on top but make sure to empty and squash the bottle first to save space in recycling bags
- Plastic lids on glass bottles – remove these before taking glass to bottle banks
