First look: Wokingham Borough’s new recycling bags
Here are the bags you'll receive to keep your recycling dry. These will replace the black boxes we currently use for our mixed recycling. Expect to see lots on them in the New Year when we’ll have more information on their rollout.
As the delivery of the bags gets closer, we’ll be answering some of the most frequently asked questions about them in this newsletter. This week:
Q: Should we store the bags inside to keep the contents dry?
A: If you can keep the bags inside that would be great but we understand not everyone can. If you have to store them outside please keep them sealed all the time to keep the contents dry.
As we are able to provide updates on the rollout to residents, this newsletter will be the best place for the latest information. So keep your eyes peeled and let your neighbours know to sign up.
Changes to collection days over Christmas
Want to find out when your bins will be collected over Christmas? All the information is now live on our website. Just enter your postcode and select your property to check.
There will be no collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day, to allow our waste teams some time with their families over the festive period.
You can check our news website for the full list of changes, as well as festive recycling tips.
Collections will return to the normal on 11 January 2021.
Take glass to the bottle bank
We have had multiple incidents where members of waste collection crews have been injured by glass in blue bags in recent weeks.
Several have cut their legs when sharp edges of glass have been slightly poking out of bags while out on their rounds.
Glass should be recycled and not put in blue bags. It should be taken to the nearest bottle bank, check your closest on the Recycle Now website.
If it’s impossible to take it there, wrap glass in newspaper and place into the bags so the edges are not exposed. This reduces chance of injury for our collection crews.
 Christmas recycling: What goes where?
Here are some of the most common items you ask us about when recycling at Christmas. Here's where they should go to help you recycle as much as possible.
You can read a full list of recycling tips on our website.
Recycling centre opening hours over Christmas
The re3 recycling centres will be shut for a few days over Christmas and New Year.
They’ll be closing early (at 4pm) on Christmas Eve (24 December) and New Year’s Eve (31 December). Both locations are closed completely on Christmas Day (25 December), Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January).
If you’re using the festive break for a clear out, you’ll still need to book ahead using the Click and Tip service if you want to visit the sites at Reading or Bracknell.
The re3 website outlines what you can bring and the social distancing measures in place to keep all visitors safe.
