Improved booking system for recycling centres
Bookings for visiting the tips at Reading and Bracknell have been updated to make it easier for you to reserve a spot.
The new system allows more flexibility, with bookings possible with just an hour’s notice if there’s space as well as cancellations with three hours’ notice if your plans change.
It also features a clearer display system (shown in the picture above) to make it easier to see when there’s space to book and integrated commercial vehicle bookings to visit Smallmead and Longshot Lane.
Recycling centres are staying open during the lockdown, you can book now.
How many of the new waterproof bags will I get?
As we get closer to the rollout of our new waterproof recycling bags, each week we’ll be answering some of the most frequently asked questions on them in this newsletter. This week:
Q: How many bags will I get?
A: Each house will receive two bags. However, residents will be able to collect additional bags after the borough-wide roll out if additional capacity is needed.
As we are able to provide updates on the rollout to residents, this newsletter will be the best place for the latest information, so keep your eyes peeled and let your neighbours know to sign up.
Recycle batteries safely
A fire started at one of our recycling centres due to a battery being left in a local recycling collection last month.
It was extinguished quickly thanks to staff and help from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue but it could have been easily avoided.
Batteries can be recycled but they should never go into blue rubbish bags or recycling boxes. You should always check whether batteries are in other items, then remove them and recycle the batteries separately.
These should be taken to your nearest battery recycling facility, often at a nearby shop or supermarket. You can find your closest battery recycling point on the Recycle Now website.
Get your bulky items taken away
If you’ve got a bed or sofa at home, which you want taken away but can’t find time to take it to the recycling centre, you could use our bulky waste collection service.
You can book online for a Tuesday or Wednesday collection, with it being bookable up to eight weeks in advance. This costs £56 and applies for collection of up to five items.
This includes beds, sofas, cookers and much more, with a full list of items published on our website.
If you want to book it can be done on our website. These items can also be disposed of using a legitimate commercial collection operator or at the household waste recycling centres in Reading or Bracknell.
Our app helps you recycle even more
Have you tried the re3cyclopedia app?
It’s available on Apple and Android devices and is one of the easiest ways to find the nearest and fastest way to recycle hundreds of items.
All you do is enter the details of the item and your postcode, then the app does the rest.
It has a number of additional features too, including:
- Check your general waste and recycling collection dates
- Report missed bins
- Apply for a commercial permit to the recycling centres
- Receive news and event updates
