How we'll stop the spread in Wokingham Borough
Our plan on how we’ll work with partners to reduce risk of Covid infections and outbreaks has been agreed. The proposals, developed alongside NHS and Public Health partners, were signed off by our Local Outbreak Engagement Board last night (Thursday).
It sets out:
- How we’ll prevent and manage outbreaks to minimise spread of infection
- How we’ll respond to outbreaks in care homes, schools and other high risk places
- The methods we’ll use to get information to residents

Backing our businesses
More than 1,500 local businesses have now been supported with grants paid through our teams.
We’ve passed on £18.1million in grants, more than £16million in rate relief and in recent weeks more than £850,000 to small organisations like market traders, charities and those in shared offices. Our teams are still assessing applications on the last of these groups.
We’re also grateful to the two business which returned grants to the council, having decided they can get by without it.
Denmark Street closure on hold
Last weekend, we trialled a temporary closure of Denmark Street. The area was pedestrianised to help create more space for people to move around safely.
Whilst the scheme was met with positive feedback from many residents, we appreciate that it did also impact traffic through the centre of town and footfall in the town was not high enough to require the extra pedestrian space.
As such, we will keep the option of further trial closures under review. We will also continue to monitor the other social distancing measures in Wokingham town centre, and tweak them as needed.
