The majority of shops are open
Some 85 per cent of shops allowed to open in Wokingham town centre have now done so, with more joining them next week. Today’s Friday market was busy yet still had lots of space for social distancing.
The few retailers we’ve been able to speak to say business has been good all week apart from yesterday with its rain!
Disabled parking is still available apart from Rose Street although Blue Badge holders can use the former Marks and Spencer’s car park. The red barriers we’ve installed reducing road widths give you more space to walk about. And the bus shelters behind these barriers are still open so you can sit down while waiting.
Next week we’ll look at whether we need to increase pavement space along Rectory Road and Wiltshire Road.
In terms of shops, it’s a similar picture in Twyford and Woodley with a good proportion of those allowed to now open. Woodley of course has the added benefit of a pedestrianised precinct giving you all the space you need to keep safe.
Hockey, tennis, archery and football return to Cantley
The numbers allowed to take part in each of these sports will be sadly much smaller than before, and of course social distance rules still apply. But if you yearn to get back into your sports, you can.
To find out more and book hockey, email the South Berkshire Hockey Club.
For tennis, visit the GDT Tennis website for booking details and safety information.
Visit the Bowmen of Burleigh website for archery.
Football teams can also train as guided by the Football Association.
Passenger numbers on trains still low
Network Rail says social distancing on trains is still manageable even though it’s seen a 20 per cent increase in passenger numbers now non-essential shops have reopened.
It says passenger numbers haven’t increased as much as it forecast but expects this will change from 6 July with its planned uplift in services.
However, between 85 and 90 per cent of train passengers are following the new face covering rules.

Wokingham Borough Community Response moves tomorrow
Its distribution hub is re-locating from St Crispin’s Leisure Centre to Cantley Park.
In its new home it’ll continue to help people source food and essentials, but it will now also be assisting our most vulnerable and shielded residents to venture out.
For Covid-19 community support contact Citizens Advice Wokingham via its website or email or call 0300 330 1189.
Test & Trace needs all of us
As you know, the government has introduced the NHS test and trace system in England to help control the spread of Covid-19.
However, a small proportion of people nationally are failing to give their contact details if they test positive, or don’t return the tracers’ calls. This means not all potential sufferers can be warned and self-isolate.
Testing positive is understandably scary and shocking. But please, if you do test positive, your cooperation in the scheme may save the lives of those you love and people you know as well as lower the risk of a second devastating peak.
Find out more about Test and Trace on the NHS website.
