Avanti Cycling is offering free bike loans to key workers and volunteers. The company normally provides Bikeability cycle training in our primary schools.
With traffic on local roads pretty light at the moment getting back into cycling, or giving it go, might not seem so daunting.

From Pilates and Yoga, to Tai Chi and Mixed Impact Aerobics, we’ve got you covered.
Head over to our YouTube channel and take your pick of our keep fit videos.
Created by our Sports Team, the free videos will help you whatever your age or fitness level. We all know it’s important to look after your physical and mental health when there isn’t a pandemic. But keeping yourself in the best possible shape is now even more crucial.
And the beauty of doing exercise videos at home? No-one can see you. You can do them at your own pace. Or you could make it a family thing.
Toilet roll, long life milk, tinned carrots, sugar and hot meals (such as tinned ravioli, meatballs, and curry) are currently needed by Wokingham Foodbank. Can you help?
You can leave your small foodbank donations at collection points in Waitrose, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsburys. For larger donations email: info@wokingham.foodbank.org.uk
The foodbank in Wokingam town centre is for people who cannot afford to buy food. In the last five weeks they’ve seen a 400% increase in demand. People may be furloughed but their drop in income has left them struggling. They may be self-employed or on zero hour contracts, or are waiting for their Universal Credit payments to start.
The foodbank is slightly different to the Wokingham Borough Community Response hub (see the story below). The hub also supports people who can afford food, but they may be self-isolating or shielding at home and can't get a supermarket delivery slot, nor have friends or family to shop for them.
Referrals for both the foodbank and the hub currently go via Citizens Advice Wokingham on 0300 330 1189, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm.
We’ve added more drop-off points for your donations to Wokingham Borough Community Response – things such as food, toiletries and wellbeing goody bags.
You can now drop these off at Lower Earley, Twyford and Woodley borough libraries; Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am and noon. (Please note the libraries aren’t open for normal services, just donation drop-offs.)
You can however still take your donations to the main hub at St. Crispin’s Leisure Centre, Monday to Saturday from 8.30am – 4.30pm, if that’s easier. Thank you again for your generosity. You’ve been fantastic!
If you’ve got a moment, check out this short video from Emma Cantrell, CEO of charity First Days, showing how we and the borough’s charities, voluntary groups are teaming up responding to Covid-19.
On 8 May it’ll be 75 years since the Second World War ended in Europe. But even though outside events won’t be happening, you can still celebrate at home via our virtual library.
Find out about the many VE Day activities planned on our libraries blog which is due to go live next week.Things to do include:
- A look at how Wokingham celebrated VE Day in an article by local historian Jim Bell
- Recommended books from our digital library about WW2 and how it ended
- A playlist of 1940's music available on our free music streaming service
- A ‘bake along’ using wartime recipes posted throughout May. (One of our staff members will also be baking the cakes and posting their pictures on the blog.)
- Amazing Animal Adventures with book ideas and activities about animal heroes during the wars
Increased demand for these garden waste bins, plus problems getting them from Europe at this time, has meant delays in delivering them to some of you. We are sorry about this and are doing all we can to get things back on track.
To compensate, we’ve extended the 2020 to 2021 service by one month to now finish on 30 April 2021. Our annual subscription usually runs until 31 March.
Remember if you’re really stuck, you can also order garden waste sacks from us by calling (0118) 974 6000.
