Westmorland and Furness Council is promoting an enhanced Pass Plus scheme aimed at developing young drivers' skills and confidence, while helping to reduce casualties on our roads.
Pass Plus is a practical training course delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) after you have passed your driving test. The course includes at least six hours of additional training and covers a range of driving situations, including rural roads, night-time driving, poor weather and higher-speed routes.
To encourage more young drivers to take part, the council is now offering £150 towards the cost of the training. The scheme forms part of the council's wider road safety work to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.
An upgrade of our income management system means that some payment services will be unavailable on Tuesday 20 October in the former Barrow and South Lakeland areas. On this day, our staff will not be able to take payments over the phone, process in-person card payments using certain payment terminals, enter electronic payment information, or carry out daily payment processing activities.
All other payment facilities – such as personal online banking, via the council’s website, automated touchtone phone line, payments at car parking pay & display machines or using AllPay at any Post Office or Pay Point store if you have a bar-coded bill - will be available as normal and all services will be available again from Wednesday 21 October.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
The UK’s telephone network is changing, with traditional analogue landlines moving to digital services by 31 January 2027.
For most people, the switch will be simple and many people across the UK have already moved to a digital phone service. However, if you use devices connected to your landline, such as telecare alarms, fall detectors or health monitoring devices, it’s important to respond to any communications from your telephone provider to make sure these services continue to work.
Extra support may be available if you:
- Are aged 75 or over
- Use a personal alarm or medical device
- Do not have broadband at home
- Live in an area with poor mobile signal or do not have a mobile phone
- Have additional needs
Your provider, such as BT, Virgin Media or O2, will contact you before your service is switched. Please read any letters, emails, texts or appointment details carefully and follow the instructions provided.
They may ask you to:
- Confirm a free engineer appointment
- Discuss available support
- Check what devices are connected to your landline
- Prepare equipment for the switchover
Be aware of scams. Never share personal or financial information if you receive an unexpected call, email, text or doorstep visit. If in doubt, contact your provider directly using a trusted number.
