A new three-times-a-day Sunday timetable on the 563 Penrith-Kirkby Stephen route is among the new bus services launched this summer in Westmorland and Furness.
The Sunday 563 bus between Penrith and Kirkby Stephen goes via Temple Sowerby, Kirkby Thore, Appleby, Warcop (for Eden Valley Railway) and Brough, and is operated by Stagecoach.
Greeting the new service which has launched in time for this weekend's Westmorland Dales Festival, Cllr Adrian Waite, our Cabinet Member for Transport and Environmental Services, said: "I was delighted to see the new 563 bus arriving in Kirkby Stephen from Penrith on Sunday morning and to talk with some of the passengers.
"This means there is now a seven-day-a-week service between Kirkby Stephen and Penrith that I trust will be well used by Kirkby Stephen residents and by visitors to the town.
"It has been more than 20 years since we last had a service seven days a week. It has been made possible by the hard work of local public transport campaigners and the commitment of Westmorland & Furness Council to invest in public transport in rural areas such as the Eden Valley.
"This weekend - Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 July - it's the Westmorland Dales Festival in Kirkby Stephen and the buses will run on both days. Why not spend some time in Kirkby Stephen at the festival and come and go by bus?"
Residents and businesses are being encouraged to ‘have your say’ in shaping the next stage of Westmorland and Furness’ first Local Plan.
The Local Plan is one of the most important documents produced by Westmorland and Furness Council. It carefully considers how many new homes and workplaces the area needs to grow. It considers the prosperity and sustainability of communities, whilst also protecting its local and historic character, landscapes, biodiversity and environment - for now and for future generations.
The next stage of the process is a ‘Scoping Consultation’, which lasts for six weeks until 11 August.

Students across England can get protection against meningococcal B disease (MenB) through a one-off vaccination programme launching ahead of the 2026 academic year.
Young people are eligible for the free two-dose MenB vaccine if you were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, or if you were born on or after 21 July 2001 and will be starting university or further education as a residential student for the first time in autumn 2026.
Two doses are needed for full protection, with the second dose given at least 28 days after the first. The vaccine helps protect against MenB, a serious infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia.
Eligible young people can get their first dose at participating community pharmacies from late July 2026. Don’t delay – arrange your vaccination early to ensure you're protected before starting student life.
