At this time of year our maintenance crews are busy out and about on the extensive Westmorland and Furness road network to remedy defects after the winter months.
£32 million has been earmarked for highways improvements this year. This includes fixing potholes, full resurfacing and surface dressing programmes and other vital upgrades, repairs and maintenance, such as works on our bridges and structures, footway resurfacing, and repairing drainage and streetlighting defects.
In one day last week our highways teams from the Eden area depot tackled 15 individual jobs as part of the maintenance programme - ranging from pothole repairs to gully clearing and fixing signposts.
Here’s a flavour of their work and a few of the jobs they carried out that day:

Planning and preparation – The team looks through the reporting system to assess and plan the day's jobs, briefing the crews and loading up vehicles with all the tools and materials

Pothole repair, Pikestone Lane, Tebay – One of our specialist ‘Jet Patcher’ machines is used to fill a pothole with bitumen emulsion under high pressure. Jet Patching is a quick and highly efficient method that repairs small potholes in a matter of minutes, reducing disruption to the public and providing a long-lasting repair.

Drainage improvement, close to Hazel Bank Gardens, Yanwath village – Old road surface removed and road drainage re-set and new surface laid, to prevent water pooling and keeping water away from a roadside wall

Gully clearing, B5320, Yanwath – Keeping water off the road is the first part of preventing potholes forming. Through our routine maintenance we clear gullies ready for wetter weather. This blocked gully was reported and required the silt to be dug out, then the gully wagon sucked out more debris and cleared the blockage so the gully now drains freely.

Families can book free summer holiday places through the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, running from today (17 July) to 3 September.
Activities available through HAF include sports, arts and crafts, music, drama, science sessions, cooking activities and creative learning, all delivered by experienced schools, community groups and youth organisations.
Children can attend up to 16 days of activities during the summer holidays.
