Councillor Hazel Edwards is the newly elected Westmorland and Furness Council Member for Hawcoat and Newbarns after winning a by-election held in the ward on Thursday 4 June.
Cllr Edwards won the seat recently vacated by Niyall Phillips, who stood down in April due to relocating to Australia as part of his employment with BAE Systems.
The result means that Reform UK has its first member of Westmorland and Furness Council. The Liberal Democrat Party, led by Cllr Jonathan Brook, maintains its majority on the council with 35 out of 65 seats.
A total of 2,360 votes were cast in the Hawcoat and Newbarns by-election, representing a turnout of 27.16%.
If you live in Westmorland and Furness and wish to continue receiving garden waste collections - or would like to begin using the service - you’ll need to sign up and subscribe at a cost of £60 per bin, per year.
The quickest and easiest way to do this is online at: www.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/gardenwaste, where you can also find more information. You can also subscribe by telephone, on 0300 373 3300.
If you’re signing up to the service for the first time and don’t currently have a bin, you can have your first bin delivered free of charge, although the subscription fee will still apply. If you already have a garden waste bin, you can continue using it but you will need to subscribe to have it collected. If you need any additional bins, these can be purchased for a one‑off fee of £25 each but each bin will require its own subscription.
Once you've signed up, a sticker will be posted to you to place on your bin. Any additional bins ordered will be delivered after sign up is complete.
From 29 June onwards, only bins with a valid sticker will be collected.
This doesn't affect general household waste or recycling collections.
