The first of our information drop-in sessions about the future of Applethwaite Green Care Home in Windermere and Grisedale Croft Care Home in Alston will take place this June.
As part of the council’s 12-week public consultation, these sessions provide an opportunity to speak with members of the council’s Adult Social Care team. They will be available to share information about each care home, outline the options being considered, answer questions, and explain how to complete the consultation survey. Support will also be available for those who need help completing the survey online or in print, and attendees can raise any individual concerns.
The Applethwaite Green session will be held at Windermere Library on Monday 1 June from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The Grisedale Croft session will take place at Alston Library on Wednesday 3 June from 11am to 1pm.
The online consultation can be found on our website:

Samson, a much-loved swan at Barrow Park, has had a distressing week after being injured by illegal fishing activity.
The male swan, part of a nesting pair with two young cygnets on the park’s boating lake, was discovered with a fishing hook embedded in his leg. A member of the public raised the alarm after spotting fishing line wrapped around him. Park Rangers attended and found Samson in visible distress, prompting a rescue effort involving the RSPCA and local wildlife rescuer Rachel from Rachel’s Wildlife Rescue.
After several attempts, Samson was safely rescued the following day and taken to Wild Side Vets in Barrow, where the hook was removed. He has since been returned to the lake and will continue to be monitored.
The incident highlights why fishing is banned at the lake, with discarded tackle posing serious risks to wildlife. The council is urging visitors to respect byelaws and report illegal activity.
