Westmorland and Furness Council is consulting on proposed changes to arrangements for Blue Badge holders across our car parks.
The council recently adopted a Parking Strategy highlighting improvements planned for on and off-street car parking it has responsibility for. This describes how we plan to use this coordinated approach to support better delivery of parking outcomes for our local businesses, communities and visitors, while contributing to wider council aims.
For Blue Badge holders, it is proposed that the council has a single consistent approach to Blue Badges across our car parks. Therefore, it is proposed that all Blue Badge holders will be entitled to three hours free parking on our car parks, but only in the designated accessible (Blue Badge) parking bays, and when displaying their Blue Badge. The Parking Service will be required to implement a revised parking structure to help achieve the enforcement improvements.

Police are issuing a warning about QR code fraud in car parks – following reports of scammers targeting a number of sites in south Cumbria.
The car parks where fraudulent activity has been reported are: Broad Street car park in Windermere; Low Fold car park in Ambleside; Ferry Nab parking and Braithwaite Fold car park, both in Bowness-on-Windermere.
Stickers were placed on payment meters by fraudsters. Checks are being carried out and removal taking place.

Now’s the time for LGBTQ+ people across Cumbria to consider fostering, as Cumbria Fostering proudly supports the launch of LGBTQ+ Adoption & Fostering Week 2026.
Led nationally by the charity New Family Social, this year’s campaign theme, ‘Now’s The Time’, highlights an important message: while there’s never a “perfect” moment to start the fostering journey, there is an urgent need for more foster carers right now.
As part of the week’s activities, Cumbria Fostering will host a special online information session on Tuesday 3 March, 6pm–7pm. Attendees can join from home to hear a short presentation, meet the team, and ask questions about fostering.
Register to join the event on the Cumbria Fostering website or speak to the team on 0300 019 0200.
