Cumbria Constabulary, supported by the Local Authority, are updating their Missing Persons policy and procedures to align with national guidance, with changes going live in January 2026.
The updates aim to ensure a proportionate police response when a child is reported missing, avoiding unnecessary police involvement that could negatively affect the child or lead to unintended criminalisation. Risk assessments will remain thorough, but where appropriate, parents or carers may be asked to take reasonable steps before police deployment — in line with national frameworks and best practice.

The Department for Education has launched a public consultation on proposals to establish a new National Child Protection Authority (CPA) in England. This consultation runs from 11 December 2025 to 5 March 2026 and seeks views on how the CPA can strengthen leadership and accountability across child protection services.
The aim of the CPA is to provide clear system-wide oversight, improve early identification of emerging risks, embed best practice, and ensure continuous improvement in safeguarding work. It is intended to address longstanding concerns about fragmented leadership, poor information-sharing, and delays in implementing learning from serious cases.
The consultation invites responses from a wide range of stakeholders, including frontline professionals in children’s services, health, education, and policing, as well as voluntary organisations, regulators, families with lived experience, and anyone committed to improving child protection.
You can contribute by responding online through the government portal or by email. There will also be an opportunity to join an online debate between 19 and 23 January 2026 to share insights and help shape priorities for the new authority.
The deadline for responses is 5 March 2026, so please share this information with colleagues, partners, and families to ensure as many voices as possible are heard.

The National Youth Agency (NYA) have worked in partnership with Tender and Refuge to create a new resource for youth workers.
The guidance, aimed at practitioners working with 16 to 25 year olds, addresses a growing concern that abuse in young people’s relationships is often overlooked or misunderstood. It seeks to challenge misconceptions, amplify the voices of survivors, and provide practical tools for early intervention. The resource aligns with the National Youth Work Curriculum and the Code of Ethics, placing safety, equity and young people’s voices at the heart of professional practice. More information can be found here.
