 A592 Landslip road repairs
An emergency road closure has been put in place on the A592 approximately halfway between Troutbeck and the Kirkstone Inn at High Kingate, just before the start of the Kirkstone Pass, following a landslip caused by heavy rainfall.
Following the landslip, the council’s highways team put in place an emergency road closure and installed barriers to prevent people trying to use the closed section, while continuing to allow farmers and local landowners access to their fields.
Signs advising of the closure and the designated diversion routes have been put in place along all main routes leading up to the A592.
The official diversion is: for vehicles travelling from the south/west (Troutbeck side) is via the A591 to Kendal, A6 to Penrith, A66 and A592, and from the north/east A592 and A66 (Penrith) then A6 south to Kendal and A591 to Troutbeck.
For the official diversion routes around the landslip closure the council can only sign along main routes that can be accessed by the majority of vehicles. Please promote the official diversion to your visitors. Whilst there may be shorter routes, via minor roads familiar to locals, these can’t be signed as an official diversion. More information is available on the Westmorland and Furness Council website.
The towns and villages either side of the closure are still fully accessible via the diversions. Local parish councils and businesses are being updated on the landslip works and the council is working with Cumbria Tourism to help promote the message that areas around the closure, including Kirkstone Pass itself and villages in the Ullswater Valley, are still accessible and very much still ‘open for business’.
M6 to close over two weekends
Network Rail is replacing the existing bridge that carries the West Coast Main Line over the M6, between junction 39 and 40 near Penrith in Cumbria.
To safely demolish the old bridge and replace it, the M6 will close between junction 39 (Shap) and 40 (Penrith) in both directions from:
- 8pm on Friday 2 January to 5am on Monday 5 January 2026
- 8pm on Friday 9 January to 5am on Monday 12 January 2026
Part of the West Coast Main Line will also be closed between Wednesday 31 December and Thursday 15 January 2026.
The Network Rail website has more information on the closures as well as diversion routes during the closure.
Lune Gorge
Between March 2025 and February 2031, National Highways will be performing a number of road schemes on the M6 in Cumbria between junctions 34 (Lancaster) and 40 (Penrith).
The seven concrete bridges carrying the M6 over the Lune Gorge are reaching the end of their serviceable life and need repairing to reduce the need for costly, disruptive maintenance in future.
National Highways are preparing for main works which are due to start in spring 2027. More information is available on the National Highways website.
