We’re proud to share some of the progress we’re making to deliver on our priorities for the people and places of Westmorland and Furness.
As part of our ‘Health and Wellbeing’ mission, we’re working to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live an active, healthy life. One example is our work towards creating a smoke-free Westmorland and Furness, with smoking cessation officers supporting people to quit. Highlights include:
- 1-1 sessions and groupwork for those wanting to quit
- Access to the Allen Carr’s Easyway programme
- Working with pharmacies to provide support
As part of our ‘Culture’ mission, we’re working to ensure everyone has access to creative opportunities and high-quality cultural experiences.
One example is last year’s launch of our Events and Festivals Grant Scheme, which awarded grants of £1,000 to £10,000 from a £100,000 fund.
You can explore more about this and other local projects in our Annual Report.
On Sunday 15 June, thousands of people are taking on the Windermere Marathon. To ensure the safety of all participants, the event has nearby road closures in place, including the B5285 between Hawkshead to the top of Ferry Hill, Far Sawrey from 8:45am to 10:45am.
Our ferry will continue to operate with vehicles still being able to access our service, however please be aware they will not be able to exit onto B5285 between these times.
Pedestrians and cyclists will still have full access to surrounding routes, so our service is a perfect for those wanting to head out to cheer on the runners along the Windermere shores, through Near and Far Sawrey and to the southern tip of the lake.
On Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 June, our service will be running reduced hours due to staffing. On both days we will be starting at the normal times of 6:50am on Saturday and 8:50am on Sunday. It will then run until 8pm, with the last run leaving Ferry House at that time.
We thank you for your patience.
The Cumbria Climate Assembly is urging leaders and businesses to “put people at the heart of climate decision-making”. The Assembly, made up of 40 people from across Cumbria chosen by lottery, has issued its final report, with 17 recommendations for change.
See the video showing how Assembly members from Westmorland and Furness worked together to reach their conclusions.
This Refugee Week 2025 (16–22 June) Cumbria Fostering is inviting you to find out more about opening your home to a child or young person seeking sanctuary at a free online event.
This year’s theme 'Community as a Superpower' shines a light on the small, everyday acts of care and kindness that build powerful support systems for those seeking safety.
At Cumbria Fostering, we see this superpower in action every day — in the homes of foster carers who open their doors to refugee children arriving alone, uncertain, and in need of protection.
