Not Sure What Your Next Steps are in Learning or Work?
As we look towards the end of this academic year, many of you will be preparing for exams, and looking ahead to the future, but sometimes we all need a little help to understand our options. We offer a FREE Information, Advice and Guidance service, run by our dedicated team of tutors and centre staff, who can help you make sense of the opportunities available to you and understand the pathway to get there.

The Summer term brings with it the annual exam season for learners across our service. For many, these exams are the culmination of a long year of hard work and dedication, and we want to wish the best of luck to all those taking exams with us this year. If you are not taking an exam this year, there are ways that you can support your fellow learners:

1. When in venues this term, please be mindful of signage that asks for quiet in areas.
2. On rare occasions your arger groups of learners in one location.

From the 16th to the 22nd of June, Cumbria Adult Learning and the Resettlement Team will be supporting Refugee week. This year the theme for Refugee Week 2025 is “Community as a Superpower”. Community is the incredible every day. Ordinary and extraordinary. Simple acts of shared generosity. Kindness multiplied to become an unstoppable force!
For further information or to see what events activities are taking place, speak to your local centre.
You will get the most from your course if you attend regularly – and if you are studying for a qualification there is a minimum attendance requirement to increase your chances of achieving.
Remember - If you cannot attend a class, please let us know by phoning the centre where your class is running. If you miss three classes in a row and haven’t let us know, you could be automatically withdrawn from the course, so please stay in touch!

Olha Aliieva joined Penrith Adult Learning ESOL class as a refugee from Ukraine in June 2022. Her job coach helped her to get a statement of comparability to show that she has a master’s in finance from her home country and is qualified equivalent to Maths Level 2 and higher.
Olha progressed very well through ESOL Speaking & Listening, and Reading Entry Level 3 courses, on to passing Functional Skills English Level 1 first time through studying online, while working as a catering assistant at QEGS. She says our ESOL and English courses helped her progress a lot in English.
In September 2024, a vacancy arose for Trust Finance Officer at QEGS and she was encouraged to apply. She was offered the position and is continuing now as she passed the Functional Skills English Level 2 exam that she took with us in February 2025. Olha says that Colin Browne was helpful and a very good teacher, providing extra links, and she is very satisfied with her studies.
Multiply was a government-funded programme designed to help adults improve their numeracy skills. Learners aged 19 and over and who don’t have maths GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) could access free numeracy courses to build confidence with numbers and progress on to gain a qualification.
The Holiday Inn in Barrow-in-Furness took up a "Team Building and Problem Solving" course to assist their staff to enhance their skills.
Staff said from the course that they improved their personal skills base, could now pay more attention to how they act at work from a more objective point of view, listen to their team more often, than just assuming they know better and have greater communication skills.
They were going to use these skills in their work and personal lives.
Building on the success of Multiply, Cumbria Adult Learning have launched a new programme aimed at supporting the communities of Cumbria with improving numeracy and literacy skills. We look forward to sharing in future newsletters how the programme is moving forward.
