Flags were flying yesterday from our buildings in Penrith, Kendal and Barrow in honour of VE Day 80.
Town halls in Kendal and Barrow were also illuminated as we joined the nationwide celebrations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, when the Second World War ended in Europe.

This historic milestone was an opportunity to give thanks to everyone who showed such courage and resilience in the conflict. We remembered all those in active service and the sacrifices they and their families made, as well as the countless people who stepped into essential roles on the Home Front.
We also thought of the many children who were evacuated to the safety of rural communities such as our own, and remembered the "Windermere Children", orphan survivors of the Holocaust, who found sanctuary and a warm welcome in the Lake District.

As these events take place in towns and villages across Westmorland and Furness this week, it's a reminder of how everyone pulled together so that we can still have strong, caring communities to this day.
Penrith Library and the Adult Learning service had a wonderful time commemorating 80 years since VE Day. Staff dressed in 1940s fashion and hosted a fabulous tea party
Last year, we launched our first Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Action Plan, outlining key areas of focus to help us achieve our equality objectives. One year on, we’re pleased to share our 12-month progress report, highlighting the actions we’ve taken so far.
EDI is more than a statutory duty for us and we’re committed to embedding it across our services, workforce and communities to foster a fairer, more inclusive Westmorland and Furness for all.
