Over 14 months, contractors worked on Kirkstone Pass to make the route more resilient to bad weather with better draining and safety features, as well as a new surface. This was part of the Government’s Safer Roads programme, funded by £7.4million, with many engineering and legal requirements governing how the work must be done.
Yet this project was underpinned by engaging with the local community and businesses, in line with the council’s Community Power strategy, and is now a “benchmark” for future road improvements.
