It’s Village Halls Week celebrating the 10,000+ halls at the heart of rural life across the country.
Here in Westmorland and Furness we have been helping these vital community hubs become more sustainable with grants to reduce their energy bills – and carbon footprints.
Solar panels on Helsington and Brigsteer Village Hall were commissioned last October. Richard Griffiths, a volunteer there, says they’re already seeing a significant reduction in the electricity bill even during the winter months, and the installation has created interest locally around fitting solar PV to homes.
In Storth Village Hall they’re increasing the insulation and installing LED lighting, while Ambleside has completed the first phase of installing LED lighting there.
Arnside Educational Institute is getting an electric vehicle charger. And new grants have been awarded to Satterthwaite Village Hall towards an energy efficient programme, and to Bouth Village Hall towards the cost of replacing guttering.
We recently held two Children’s Social Care Roadshows, one at Furness College and one at Kendal College, to talk to young people from college and years 10-11 from various secondary schools, to raise awareness of roles within Children’s Social Care.
Both days raised awareness about career opportunities in children’s social care, educational pathways, and connecting students with industry professionals and showcasing the work that currently goes on in Children’s Social Care. 100% said they had a better understanding of what a social worker does!
Hear from Charlotte Lingham, Children and Families Team Manager about her lived experience of Social Care and why she became a social worker.
