World Book Day, Read Your Way!
If you popped into your local library on 6th March, you would have seen our fantastic library staff having a great time celebrating World Book Day. We love this global celebration of books and reading. This year, World Book Day invited everyone to 'Read Your Way'. Research shows that children feel reading is something they have to do, rather than something they choose to do. Read Your Way avoids reading pressures and expectations and empowers children and young people to have fun discovering reading on their terms. Here at Westmorland and Furness libraries, we shared pictures of our staff reading their way, in castles, up trees and surrounded by their pet rabbits! We shared stories with our story time groups and dressed up as our favourite book characters. Our wonderful outreach team visited schools and nurseries to tell stories and let the children know all about how the library can continue to inspire a love of reading for pleasure.
 Celebrating Women's History Month
Every March Women's History Month raises awareness of the contributions women have made to events through history and society.Taking place 8 March every year, International Women's Day is a chance to acknowledge the achievements of women whilst raising awareness about discrimination and gender inequality. This years theme was “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating and Inspiring Generations.” We were all called on to celebrate the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership. Through their efforts, they have served as an inspiration for all generations.
Westmorland and Furness libraries shared book displays featuring books by and about women and enjoyed celebrating by sharing staff recommendations of their favourite books across social media and within our libraries.

We wanted to share this achievement with our fantastic community. It was truly special to come together and reflect on everything we've achieved over the past 18 months. We shared stories, met other volunteers, and celebrated the impact these projects have had on our communities, which was incredibly heartwarming. Special 'Thank you!' to Olivia Dacre for the wonderful Live music performance, Steph at Cherries Catering for the incredible food and beautiful layout, Tessa Blades and the team at Libraries Connected for all their support; and special attendees Mayor Judith McEwan and Bill McEwan, along with our incredible volunteers and members! Huge thanks also to our incredible Library Staff, for all their help, support and encouragement over the last 18 months! While this chapter of the 'Love Barrow Libraries' Project may be ending, the connections we've made and communities we've joined will continue as well as our volunteer roles at Barrow Library, which will remain open and welcoming to anyone who would like to join us!
