Our decision to grit isn't a game of chance... From 1 October, we monitor local weather forecasting three times every day using data sent to us from our local weather stations across the Westmorland and Furness area.
Gritting crews spring into action and treat the network when road temperatures are forecast to drop below zero degrees Celsius so there’s a fresh coating of grit to break down the slippery surface.
Before driving in freezing temperatures, make sure your:
- Tyre’s are fully inflated
- Windows have been de-iced and you have plenty of windscreen
- Vehicle always has an emergency bag including a hi-visibility jacket and warm clothes

The national wraparound childcare programme is part of the childcare reforms announced at the 2023 Spring Budget. The government’s ambition is that by 2026, all parents and carers of primary school-aged children who need it will be able to access term time childcare in their local area from 8am-6pm. This programme will only focus on primary school-aged children from reception to year 6, Monday to Friday during term time.
Westmorland and Furness Council would like capture the views of parents, carers and families by inviting them to complete a survey to help us shape and support wraparound childcare in Westmorland and Furness to meet the needs of children, parents, carers and families.
