Reading Groups For Everyone
Have you ever thought about joining a reading group or book club? On 14th September we’ll be celebrating National Reading Group Day, run by national charity The Reading Agency. Did you know that Westmorland and Furness libraries offer a dedicated loan service to reading groups. Each set of books consists of 12 paperback copies of the title, plus a copy in large print and talking book formats, where these are available.
Registration to use the service is free and there are no charges for borrowing sets. All your group needs to do is elect a secretary who will be responsible for organising the loans through our reading group loan service. When you have been registered as a member of a reading group, you will be able to access the online catalogue and search for reading group books.

Counting, It takes just one poem...
National Poetry Day is the annual mass celebration on the first Thursday of October that encourages everyone to make, experience and share poetry with family and friends. The Day starts conversations, it encourages love of language and, best of all, it’s open to absolutely everyone to join in. Whether quietly or noisily in rewarding and enjoyable ways. As the artform's most visible moment, it showcases the ways in which poetry adds value to society.

Banned Books Week
Established in 1982, Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to read. The theme for Banned Books Week 2024 (September 22-28) is "Freed Between the Lines." We can find freedom in the pages of a book — but book bans and censorship threaten that freedom, along with many other rights and institutions. During Banned Books Week 2024 and beyond, let’s share our love of right to read and the freedom found in books. Let’s be Freed Between the Lines!
