Heritage Open Day
Our libraries enjoyed taking part in Heritage Open Day. Borrowers were able to explore displays and information celebrating our local area at Kendal, Penrith and Barrow libraries. Our outreach officers collaborated with with Cumbria archives and facilitated a display of wonderful children's art inspire by historic buildings from across Westmorland and Furness. Lorraine from Barrow Library and Susan from archives visited Dalton Welfare Centre. They shared pictures of the local area with services users and listened to stories about their school days.
Penrith Chamber Stars of Business Awards 2024
Congratulations Claire! We are delighted that our wonderful and talented Library Outreach Project Officer for the Eden area Claire Dougherty have been nominated for Penrithian of the Year in this year's Stars of Business Awards.
Claire works so hard putting on events, running groups, facilitating cultural activities, working with partners, schools and young people and advocating for the positive benefits of reading and we are delighted that her hard work and dedication has been recognized.
This years nominations will be entered into a public vote which will be advertised online and through the Herald Newspaper.
Ulverston Lantern Festival
Our wonderful Library team were delighted to take part in the Ulverston Lantern Festival. A huge thank you to all our hard working, crafty staff who helped created a fantastic colourful Elmer lantern complete with sign and his little blue bird friend! The story of Elmer holds a special place in our libraries hearts and we couldn't think of a better representative for us at the Ulverston Lantern Festival! “Elmer was different. Elmer was patchwork. Launching this Green Libraries Week, Westmorland and Furness Libraries are delighted to share this carefully curated collection with you. These books have been chosen with the aim of supporting ecological awareness and suggesting hands on ways to make a change in the world, one little change at a time. Go Green collection can be found at Barrow, Kendal and Penrith Libraries and through the BorrowBox app. The collection can also be requested through your local library.
Plastic Free by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz
In July 2011, Rebecca Prince-Ruiz challenged herself to go plastic free for the whole month. Starting with a small group of people in the city of Perth, the Plastic Free July movement has grown into a 250-million strong community across 177 countries. Plastic Free offers hope for the future through the stories of those who have taken on what looked like an insurmountable challenge and succeeded in innovative and practical ways, one step and one piece of plastic at a time.

October 1st 2024 marks the beginning of Black History Month, widely regarded as one of the most prominent cultural celebrations of the year. Honouring the contributions made to society by people of Black heritage and their communities, Black History Month is a time to educate and enrich the world with the importance of Black history. Black History Month is the annual celebration and commemoration of moments in history, achievements and contributions that Black people have made.
First brought to the UK in the 1980s, Black History Month was initially introduced to the country by a member of the Greater London Council, Akyaaba Addai Sebo. Since 1987, Black History Month has been celebrated annually in the UK, to eradicate discrimination and encourage racial equality.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

Dyslexia Awareness Week
The British Dyslexia Assosiation works towards a dyslexia friendly society, they work hard to raise awareness of dyslexia and to challenge common misconceptions. Dyslexia Awareness Week 2024 theme is, What's your story?
Every story is different. Dyslexia affects everyone differently. Each person is unique and so is everyone’s experience of dyslexia. Dyslexia impacts around 10% of the population, that’s over 6.7 million stories to tell. It’s never too late to change your story. We know that the right support at the right time can make a dramatic difference. Together, we can create a world where all people with dyslexia can flourish.
