Although most of our area is free from ice and snow, our routes on high ground in Alston, Kirkby Stephen and Penrith are being affected by snow drifts.
Crews are currently working round the areas and will continue out there for as long as the light allows before returning first thing in the morning to clear any remaining snow.
As you can see from these before and after photos captured between Barras and Tan Hill during the Beast from the East in 2018, some of our rural roads affected by snow drifts are too dangerous for our crews to treat in the dark.
If you’re planning to travel this evening in affected areas, please do so with care and make sure you vehicle is winter ready.
The next Big Windermere Survey is being held on Sunday 18 February.
Anyone can take part and volunteers need no previous experience.
Launched jointly by the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) and Lancaster University, the Big Windermere Survey has recruited a team of local volunteer citizen scientists to help assess the environmental health of Windermere. It has completed six rounds of surveys representing a full year’s worth of data spanning the four seasons for 2022/23 and the Summer and Autumn seasons for 2023/24.
Citizen scientists are trained to collect water samples from approximately 100 different locations on Windermere and in the rivers and lakes that flow into it. The samples are analysed for nutrient and bacterial concentrations at independent laboratories, producing the largest, one-day snapshot of conditions in Windermere.
The surveys are supported by the Love Windermere partnership, which consists of organisations drawn from a range of sectors, including Westmorland and Furness Council, all united by a desire to ensure the lake and the surrounding environment live up to its world heritage site status.
