TOP STORY: Council announces tender opportunities for up to £200 million in capital works

High quality contractors and suppliers have been invited to tender their services for up to £200 million in major capital projects, following the publication of Westmorland and Furness Council’s Capital Works Framework (2024-2028).

The construction work projects commissioned from the framework are expected to include highway maintenance and improvement schemes, schools and corporate property maintenance and improvement works, new build highways and property schemes and economic development and regeneration projects.

Specific commitments will also be included to reduce carbon in the supply chain, which may include mandatory carbon reporting and calculators for all construction projects.

It was fantastic to see events and services across Westmorland and Furness so well attended over the weekend to commemorate Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Several members and senior officers attended services yesterday to pay their respects and lay wreaths on behalf of the council.

Highways team worked hard to deal with the effects of the Storm Debi

During peak hours of the recent weather warning (from 9am on Monday 13 November to 10am on Tuesday 14 November) our highways service received over 250 calls and online reports via our service centre and from other agencies such as Cumbria Police, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service and utility companies.

Out of those reports, our senior duty response team identified 57 to be emergencies that received our immediate attention including:

29 trees blocking roads
5 high risk calls outs for building issues - flying debris, tiles and signs – that were immediately made safe
14 flood emergency reports
7 traffic lights, street lights or utility emergency calls outs

A huge thank you to our residents for their patience as our dedicated teams worked to keep our roads safe and moving.
