Today, a year on from her passing, we remember Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s lifetime of service through one of her many visits to our area. Pictured, the Queen alongside Windermere Lake Cruises vessel MV Teal in 2013.
It’s continuing to be warm this week which makes our lakes and rivers look more inviting for a swim.
If you are spending time near water, make sure you know what to do if you were to fall in. The advice is not to panic, float on your back and then either call for help or swim to safety.
If you've consumed alcohol, do not enter the water, and avoid walking routes near water.
Never enter the water to try and help a person or animal - always call 999 and use any water rescue equipment if it is available.
If you are spending time near water whether at home or abroad, make sure you are familiar with local safety information and that children are always fully and actively supervised.

Tomorrow (Saturday 9 September) will be Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) day. The annual campaign raises awareness about the importance of going alcohol-free for the 9 months of pregnancy.
FASD results when prenatal alcohol exposure affects the developing brain and body. This is a neurodevelopmental condition with lifelong cognitive, emotional and behavioural challenges. In addition to effects on the brain, FASD is a full-body diagnosis that can include more than 400 known conditions.
Over 40% of women in the UK use alcohol during pregnancy, making our country the 4th highest rate of alcohol exposed pregnancies in the world. Early diagnosis and appropriate support are essential, especially for executive functioning.

Last weekend we were proud to show our support for Merchant Navy Day (3 September) to honour those who were our country's lifeline during both World Wars, and celebrate our modern-day merchant seafarers who are responsible for more than 90% of the UK's imports.
From Friday to Monday, we flew the Red Ensign flag at Penrith Town Hall, Kendal Town Hall and Barrow Town Hall, as well as at Ferry Nab in Windermere.
The 3 September 1939 marked the outbreak of the Second World War and also marked the first major British maritime casualty, the merchant vessel SS Athenia, torpedoed just a few hours after hostilities were declared.
This day later became enshrined as Merchant Navy Day to honour the bravery of those during both World Wars, and to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.
Join us! There are currently 63 job opportunities available to apply for now.
