Yesterday (Thursday 15 June), we made a significant commitment to the Armed Forces by signing the national Armed Forces Covenant.
This means we recognise the value of serving personnel, veterans, Reserve Forces and military families, and promise to ensure those that serve or have served, and their families, will be treated fairly and will not be disadvantaged by their military life.
The Leader of the Council, Councillor Jonathan Brook, together with Major Jennifer Henry of the Army HQ Northwest, signed the covenant at a meeting of Full Council in Kendal, following a unanimous vote by members to support it.
We have also appointed three new Armed Forces Champions which will see them champion and advocate on behalf of the Armed Forces Covenant in their localities. These are: Councillor Bill McEwan for Barrow, Councillor Mike Eyles for Eden, and Councillor Vicky Hughes for South Lakeland.

Our new-look play area at Milnthorpe's Owlet Ash is looking as bright as the sunny weather we've all been enjoying!
This fantastic new playground officially opened on Tuesday 13 June.
It was a pleasure to see youngsters discovering the new play equipment and to bring this project to life with partners South Lakes Housing and Ørsted's Walney Extension Community Fund.
We've had to temporarily board over the trampoline at Vickerstown Park, Walney as the trampoline webbing straps have become very worn and at risk of snapping and the rubber safety surface at the edge of the trampoline has also been damaged.
The good news is we've ordered the replacement parts and hope to complete the repair and have children bouncing on the trampoline again as soon as we can!
