Learner Achievement Awards 2024

Celebrating the success of adult learning
This year’s Learner Achievement Awards celebrated the success of adult learning in West Berkshire, and the incredible determination of individuals to improve their lives through education, often in difficult circumstances.
The awards ceremony was held at Shaw House on 8 November and included guest speaker, Helen Saxton, a local author and a key part of the Dead Herring murder mysteries.
You can see all the award winners here, but the following gives a flavour.
Nadiia Torpova, the winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award, escaped from Ukraine in 2022 with no job, no secure home and limited knowledge of the UK language and culture. After completing a range of English courses at The Vici Language Academy, including specific business and technical language skills, she is now working within the UK Hydro Engineering industry.
Linda Turner (Determination Award) was pushed out of her comfort zone when she was going through a difficult time to take part in a Creative Wellbeing for Mental Health course and now exhibits and sells her artwork.
The winner of the Returning to Learning Award, Charlotte Davies, overcame her lack of confidence and several other challenges when she enrolled on a range of parenting courses at her local Family Hub. She is now volunteering at the Hub and is planning to embark on a Level 3 childcare course to develop a career in the Early Years sector.
Rona Maail won the Inspiring Others Award in recognition of the work she does to support the local Afghan migrant community. Fleeing Afghanistan and starting over in a new country requires resilience and determination. As a mother, a student, and a valued community member, Rona is dedicated to helping others to navigate a new language and culture.
Gina McGuiness received the Tutor Award. She is a well-respected teacher who has taught at Newbury College for over 20 years across a variety of accredited and non-accredited English programmes and levels. Born in the UK to Italian parents, Gina’s strengths as a teacher stem from an understanding of what it is like to migrate to the UK, the issues her students face and what motivates them to build a life here.
The Learner Achievement Awards are organised by West Berkshire Council on behalf of the Community Learning Partnership and sponsored by Newbury College, the Newbury Community Resource Centre and West Berkshire Training Consortium

At least one in 14, or over 7%, of adults across the UK cannot read or have very poor reading ability.
There are a multitude of reasons why some reach adulthood without being able to read but in every case the impact on individuals and their families cannot be underestimated.
Read Easy West Berkshire work to tackle this issue by offering free reading courses to adults aged 18plus. The courses are confidential and delivered on a 1-1 basis by dedicated and trained Reading Coaches; all coaching takes place in a private space within a public place.
Read Easy West Berkshire’s Team Leader Mark Ingvorsen explains, “There are lots of different reasons why people don’t learn to read in childhood or at school. For some it may have been a lack of support from their own family or school, for others it may have been undiagnosed dyslexia. But people should not feel ashamed or embarrassed about it. We are friendly, welcoming, and here to help them.”
Stephen (pictured above) recently successfully completed the Read Easy course. His reading challenges at school were due to dyslexia which he was reluctant to talk about. Stephen now encourages other people to come forward to get help and not be embarrassed about their situation.
Stephen adds “I learnt more in 12 months with Read Easy than I did the whole time at school".

Supported by the community learning team, CCB deliver a range of short workshops that focus on supporting West Berkshire local communities.
This Autumn they kicked off the academic year with two online training workshops providing training, advice and useful information to practitioners & volunteers about saving money on utility bills and dealing with utility debt. The people who attended either work or volunteer with low-income and vulnerable individuals, including families, those with long-term health conditions, and the elderly across West Berkshire.
Learners left the course being better able to advise and support their clients to save money on their energy and water bills and tackle utility debt.

Learners said:
“I speak to clients on a variety of issues, but I am now well equipped to advise those on a low income about how to reduce their utility bills too.”
“This session provided me with the most up to date information on ways to save money and support those with financial difficulties.”
“Excellent clear information which I will share with all our client facing volunteers at The Foodbank.”
