After the success of the councils ‘Name the food waste vehicle competition’ we are pleased to announce that we have launched another school’s competition where local school children have been invited to design two of our new recycling fleets livery panels.
The waste management team look forward to receiving entries where the winning design, school name and first name of the pupil will have a chance of appearing on the side of the vehicle. There are two livery panel spaces and so two designs will be drawn from the final. Winning designs will be announced ahead of the launch of the new vehicles commencing service in Autumn 2024.
The competition will run from 1 June and close at midnight on 1 July. All schools within West Berkshire have been contacted about the competition however, if you want more information or want to get in touch just click the button below:

Make sure you get rid of your rubbish the right way! Everyone has a legal responsibility to take steps to ensure their waste is properly disposed of by an authorised person.
If waste originating from your property is found to have been fly-tipped, you are obliged to provide us with details of who you gave it to, so that the matter can be taken up with that person or company directly. If you cannot provide that information when asked, then you may receive a fine.
Don’t be afraid to ASK these questions of anyone removing YOUR waste:
- Where are they taking YOUR waste?
- What is their waste carrier’s licence number?
- What are their contact details?
Legitimate businesses will be happy to answer these questions and provide you any supporting evidence you need.
If you come across a fly tip and find something at the scene that might show who was responsible, please do not remove it, report it. One of our Waste Officers will investigate and collect the evidence. You can do your bit by reporting any incidents by clicking here.
We have increased fines for the following:
-
Fly Tipping increased from £400 to £1,000.
-
Duty of Care increased from £200 to £400.
Do not allow YOUR waste to be fly tipped, you could be fined. Keep West Berkshire looking beautiful. For more information click below.

According to the Life Cycle Assessment of Disposable and Reusable Nappies in the UK, conducted by the Environment Agency, 2-3% of our household waste is estimated to be disposable nappies, approximately 400,000 tonnes of waste each year.
The alternative is to use reusable nappies which could save you money over the course of a child’s nappy wearing life and save space in your bin.
If you have a child under the age of 18 months old, you can apply for one of our FREE real nappy trial packs (terms and conditions apply).

Looking to add a splash of colour to your home without breaking the bank? Look no further! Our Community Repaint Scheme, in partnership with Veolia, is the perfect solution for anyone looking to refresh their decor while also being environmentally conscious. By repurposing leftover paint, we're reducing waste and promoting sustainable living.
Community Repaint allows residents to drop off paint at either of our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in the usual way. Householders visiting the HWRCs will also have the opportunity to take away paint free of charge for DIY jobs or local community projects. This is a great way to pick up some free paint. In addition, this has benefits for the environment because the paint will be put to good use rather than being sent for disposal.
To drop off or pick up leftover paint please make sure you have registered for a digital permit to visit the site and have an appointment booked before you visit. This scheme is only open to West Berkshire householders and we cannot work with traders, retailers or manufacturers.

Thank you to everyone who is recycling their food waste through our weekly kerbside collection service. Food waste is taken for processing to our in vessel composting facility at Padworth, West Berkshire.
What is food waste?
Food waste isn’t just plate scrapings, gone off bread, potatoes or meat. It's tea bags, coffee grounds, egg shells, apple cores, onion/potato peel, white meat bones and any other part of a food item that you don’t eat. If you don’t compost these at home make sure you recycle them in our weekly food waste collection service.
We are recycling around 80 tonnes of food waste from West Berkshire households each week. However, on average 20% of the black bin is still made up of food waste.
There are lots of great ideas and practices we can adopt to help reduce food waste. We wanted to start sharing best practices to help as many people as possible reduce food waste and some money as well.
Click here to watch the first of three entertaining 'Rubbish Rumours' videos we are launching to help dispel the rumours of food recycling.
