Fraudulent builder sentenced to four years and three months immediate custodial sentence |

A fraudulent builder from Swindon who left work unfinished after pressuring victims to pay more than the agreed price was last week sentenced at Reading Crown Court).
Michael Corcoran aged 43 of Stainswick Lane, Swindon, was sentenced to four years and three months immediate custodial sentence after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing on 26 May 2023 to three offences of fraudulent trading contrary to section 993 (1) of the Companies Act 2006.
Mr Corcoran was prosecuted following a large investigation by officers from the Public Protection Partnership (PPP) Investigation Team supported by the PPP Joint Case Management Unit, the Council’s Legal Services, and the National Trading Standards Tri-Regional Investigation Team.

There's still time to sign up to this year's Summer Reading Challenge!
So far, we've had 3,000 children sign up across the district, and 383 take part in the under 4s Mini Challenge.
We spoke to Stevie Pickstock down at Theale Library to see how their avid readers have been getting on, which you can watch here.
Participants have until the 15th September to complete the challenge, so visit your local library for more information!
Resource Productions are running the BFI Film Academy for the 12th year!
If you're aged between 16-19 and are thinking about a career in the film and media industry, the BFI Film Academy could be for you! You'll have the chance to learn about filmmaking over five days whilst making your own short film at one of the UK's most iconic Film Studios.
The Pinewood Studios Course runs on Saturday 7, 14, 21 & 28 January and Saturday 3 February 2024 from 10am till 4pm. You’ll then graduate and screen your short film at the John Barry Theatre in Pinewood Studios on Saturday 17 February 2024.

An exhibition of new paintings and ceramics by artist Robert Fitzmaurice is opening on September 27 in Gallery 5 at West Berkshire Museum. The exhibition takes inspiration from local history, especially that of Newbury wharf in its 300th year.
Robert will be providing a free public talk at the Museum on Wednesday 18 October 2023 1:00-2:00pm, and he will be delivering a free creative workshop that explores local history and ideas using colour and line on 10 January 2024 10:00am-12:30pm. Both events are free but must be booked online.

'Festival of the Moon' shop and pub trail |

Kicking off on August 15 and continuing until September 3, the Festival of the Moon Shop Trail will immerse families in a captivating lunar escapade through Newbury's eclectic shops, including cherished local independents. Seekers of all ages can discover twelve space-themed items tucked away in various shop windows, offering an engaging quest for explorers.
Simultaneously, the Moonlit Pub Adventure, starting on August 15 and ending on September 3, celebrates the Museum of the Moon art installation and Festival of the Moon festivities with a pub trail across Newbury. The trail invites locals and visitors to experience the town's vibrant hospitality scene by visiting a selection of beloved pubs.
Those who complete each trail will be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win a huge range of prizes
