The West Berkshire Lottery has now raised over £250,000 for good causes in the district.
The milestone was reached following last week’s draw and comes three years after the lottery launched in March 2019 to help charities and good causes raise funds.
West Berkshire Lottery is a lottery for the people, by the people. It’s a fun way to help good causes without giving up precious time.
From hedgehogs and painting classes to cancer care and counselling, more than 140 local causes have signed up and are available for players to support. This means a £1 ticket helps raise funds for vital work in our community and helps players win prizes too.
Why not sign up and support a good cause today and spread some Christmas cheer this December? Not only are players in with the chance of winning weekly cash prizes of up to £25,000, but enter before Saturday 17 December and there is a chance of winning a £1,000 John Lewis gift card! A great treat to finish off your Christmas shopping, donate, or buy gifts for those in need.
We are aware that a vehicle collided with a building on Hungerford High Street (A338) in the afternoon of 13th December and that damage has been sustained to a number of buildings.
On the advice of Building Control and in the interests of public safety, Thames Valley Police have closed the High Street (A338) between Park Street and Atherton Crescent to vehicles. This closure will remain in effect until full structural surveys have been undertaken and it has been confirmed that the damaged buildings do not present a risk to passing traffic.
As the buildings are privately-owned, the Council is unable to make the buildings safe itself but will liaise with the owners and their insurers where possible to ensure that the road may be reopened as quickly as possible.
Neighbouring residents and businesses have been made aware of the closure and are being kept informed. A further update will be provided when more information is available.
We have united with Thames Valley Police and partners across West Berkshire to tackle violence against women and girls, with a particular focus on the night time economy, over the festive period.
A working group has been planning co-ordinated actions for Christmas and New Year, from which community feedback will be sought to enhance future activity.
There will be a pop-up stand in Market Place, Newbury, on Friday 16 December from 18:00 and Saturday 17 December from 16:00, with partners present to speak to the community about any concerns they may have.

Following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II in September, West Berkshire Council wished to create a lasting legacy in memory of our former long reigning monarch.
On Monday, HM Lord-Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire, Mr James Puxley, and the Chairman of West Berkshire Council, Councillor Rick Jones, planted a Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) at Stroud Green in Newbury in tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II.
A tulip tree was chosen as it is said to have been one of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite trees and the location close to Newbury Racecourse was selected as the late Queen was a regular visitor to the Racecourse and a keen horsewoman.
