This year, we are looking to create a sustainable Christmas shopping guide for residents featuring local independent stores, charity shops, farmshops, craft stores, environmental events such as repair cafes and swap shops, and more.
With the cost of living crisis affecting us all, we want to ensure that we promote local businesses to residents this Christmas. In addition, as shoppers also face increasing costs, we will be encouraging them to ‘shop less but shop better’ or ‘upcycle’ with the intention of promoting sustainable options for them. If possible, we would also encourage you to provide discounts or offers to shoppers for us to promote.
What is your business doing to help make West Berkshire a green district? This could include publishing a climate strategy or plan, achieving carbon certification, using renewable energy and recyclable packaging, or choosing a sustainable supply chain. Maybe you provide vegan or locally-sourced produce, or support environmental projects in your area.
Here are some ideas that you can include in your application and you can also read about our own Environmental priorities in our Environment Strategy here!
- Reducing carbon emissions to help achieve carbon neutrality, e.g. offsetting schemes, locally-sourced merchandise, renewable electricity
- Seeking to reduce air pollution e.g. sustainable transport targets
- Supporting local environmental projects
- Recycling and re-using within your business or supply chain
- Encouraging local innovation and skills to help tackle climate change
- Encouraging behaviour change, e.g. eco-friendly produce, vegan and vegetarian
- Any certifications achieved or business policies relating to climate change or the environment
The deadline for applications is 11.59pm 30 October 2022. We are aiming to publish the online magazine mid-November.
