To All West Berkshire Libraries Customers
Welcome to our August news!
The school summer holidays are here and there is a lot happening in our libraries. We look forward to welcoming you. Please read on to find out more.
Over two thousand children are already taking part in our Gadgeteers, Summer Reading Challenge. There is still plenty of time to sign up and read six library books before the closing date of 15 September, so drop in to your local library to start your challenge now.
There’s more fun on the Gadgeteers website as well, where children can play games, review their latest reads, enter competitions and find suggestions for what to read next. You can also set your own reading challenge online.
Don’t forget that West Berkshire Libraries have a reading challenge for adults, too. Borrow and read three library books (including e-books or audiobooks) to enter our prize draw to win a WiFi tablet.
Rhymetimes at Newbury Library are continuing on Tuesdays at 11am but most of our regular activities for children take a break over the summer. However, throughout the school holidays we have lots of special activities for you to enjoy, all of which are free.
We have weekly craft sessions running in a number of locations:
These are drop-in sessions, no need to book. For more information, please contact your local library.
Our summer holiday LEGO Clubs are running in the following libraries:
Please check with the library concerned for dates and further information.
Newbury Library is holding two coding workshops for youngsters over 8 years of age. Build a robot from our LEGO and we’ll show you how to program it with a face that moves!
Workshops will take place on Tuesday 23 August, 2-3pm and 3.30-4.30pm. These sessions are free but numbers will be limited and advance booking is essential. To book, please email library@westberks.gov.uk.
Newbury Library will also be hosting a code breaking activity for children 9-11 years, led by staff from digit<all>. Participants will need to search the library to find hidden codes and use BBC micro:bits to collect and unscramble them. Again, advance booking is essential for this activity on Friday 19 August, 10am-12pm. To book, please email library@westberks.gov.uk.
There is no need to book for our fun junk modelling session for children 5-11 years at Theale Library on Thursday 11 August, 3-4.30pm. Just drop in to build a model vehicle that can travel on the moon or in space. All materials provided.
Adults and children who are home schooling are invited to come along to a new group which will meet at Hungerford Library on Saturdays 20 August, 17 September, 15 October and 19 November, 10.30am-12pm. Join us at these informal meetings to meet with other families and share your ideas.
Drop in to Pangbourne Library any time during opening hours to take part in our summer-themed treasure hunt for children.
Look out for our Gadgeteers treasure hunts in all libraries later in the month too, as well as colouring activities, word searches and quizzes.
There is so much to enjoy in our libraries this summer! We hope to see you soon.
Whether you are at home or away over the coming weeks, don’t forget that West Berkshire library members can access our e-library wherever you are.
