Walk to School Week: 16-20 May
Do you have school-aged children? Will they join the #Powerup challenge this year? Could you encourage your school to take part in the Living Streets Walk to School week? They can order packs here and we also have a Walk To School assembly resource for primary schools which can be accessed by getting in touch with Paul.Graham1@westberks.gov.uk
Paul is also available all year round to discuss with schools ideas around how to promote active travel.
The year, the Great Big Green Week is taking place 24 September - 2 October. This is a nationwide celebration of action on climate change, and we are encouraging our community groups and town and parish councils to take part.
This Community Fund supports groups to organise local events, activities and festivals during the Great Big Green Week 2022. These should engage the local community and celebrate action and progress being made on climate change.
There are 3 sizes of fund grants available:
- Small Grant: £200 to £500 (deadline 30 June)
- Medium Grant: £500 to £5,000 (deadline 30 June)
- Large Grant: £5,000 to £10,000 (deadline 8 May)

Reading Buses have confirmed that over 6000 tickets were issued over the four days of the Easter free bus travel event, this included 2440 passengers that traveled on additional services operated in Newbury on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
This initiative helped support sustainable public transport and encouraged people to get out and about in Reading and to take a look at Newbury’s Easterfest.
Building on this success West Berkshire Council in partnership with Reading Buses and Thames Travel will be offering a similar travel offer over the 4 day Jubilee weekend at the beginning of June.

We have recently funded a new Handybus for use by residents! Run by the Volunteer Centre West Berkshire (VCWB), the new book-a-ride service will begin operating in the towns in the next couple of weeks.
The bus, which has been adapted to be fully accessible, was successfully funded through the Council’s Capital Grant Fund, which is available for all local community transport operators to bid for.
The new service will mean that those unable to use public transport will still have a more sustainable way to get around than each driving. The new service will provide access local town centres for shopping, attend appointments and meet friends.

New eCargo bikes are being offered to local businesses in the district to try out as part of a new environment scheme.
Two new bikes are available with large capacity 700 litre cool boxes to hire with a third bike available at a later date. These are eye-catching vehicles can be branded with vinyl if the business wishes to, so long as they are removed on return. Ideas for their use could include:
- Static / mobile promotion - indoors or outdoors, at summer fayres or events etc.
- Local deliveries, in place of small vans, demonstrating a commitment to zero-carbon transport as they have a range of about 30 miles on one charge.
The bikes are available to support our vision that our town centres are innovative and entrepreneurial while promoting sustainability, biodiversity and healthy living.
If you or your business would like to hire one out, please email Alec Gore in our Environment Team or contact the team via environment@westberks.gov.uk.
You can find out more about this pilot scheme on our website.
Reusable Nappy Week 24 April – 1 May 2022
This week is reusable nappy week!
The UK disposes of around 3 billion disposable nappies each year, representing an estimated 2% to 3% of all household waste. By the time one baby is potty trained the baby could use 4,000 to 6,000 disposable nappies. You can read more here.
We are running a Real Nappies initiative to encourage the use of reusable nappies. We also offer a cashback scheme for those who have recently bought disposable nappies.
Last chance to fill in the separate weekly food waste collection survey!
We are running a survey ahead of the roll out of our separate weekly food waste collection service and would like to encourage everyone who lives in West Berkshire to take part in the survey. The survey will close on 3 May 2022 at midnight.
Thanks to everyone who has filled this out already!
International Compost Awareness Week: 1-7 May 2022
Did you know, composting at home for just one year can save global warming gases equivalent to all the CO2 your kettle produces annually? You can find out more information about the benefits and how to start composting online here!
All food and garden waste collected in West Berkshire goes to an in-vessel composting site based in Padworth. Here the waste is treated and turned into compost which is then sold locally. A video of the facility can be seen here.
For more information on where to buy composters please visit our webpage here.

It’s the perfect time of year to tackle those spring cleaning chores and enjoy the summer ahead. If you're having a spring clean help us stamp out fly tipping by always checking anyone taking your waste away has a waste carriers licence.
Nobody enjoys seeing our beautiful countryside blighted with fly tips. If your waste carrier isn’t registered and your waste is fly-tipped you could receive a £200 fixed penalty notice.
You can help us by following these tips below:
- Always check someone offering to take your waste away is registered
- Get into the habit of asking tradespeople for their waste carriers licence
- Question why someone might be offering to take away your waste much cheaper than other quotes you’ve had
- Double check the licence details they’ve given you are valid and match who they say they are
- If you’re a tradesperson, or a waste carrier, make it a point to tell customers you’re registered and show customers your licence details
It’s really simple to check to see if someone offering to take away your waste is registered, just enter their details in the register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers.
